Andy Murray was one of those players who was asked about the Alexander Zverev domestic violence trial, which opened on May 31. Whenever Murray was asked to comment on it, he questioned the ATP’s role in coming up with policies, and this time, the answer was no different.

Unlike other sports, the ATP doesn’t have any specific policies to deal with players who are facing domestic violence charges. When Zverev’s first domestic abuse case came to light in 2021, ATP expressed its intention to review the policies but so far, there are no changes to it. Murray, when asked about it, straightway said that it’s the ATP’s job to answer such questions.

It’s the ATP who should make the decision and make, you know, the policy for what that would look like. I don’t think they (the ATP Tour) did a particularly good job over the last few years. I don’t know what the word is in terms of, you know, in these situations when you might ask me about that in those press, like, it’s not for us to come up with what those policies are.
Andy Murray said at a press conference (via Tennis Actu TV)

Last year, Sascha was added to the tour’s Player Advisory Council, which prompted criticism from Sloane Stephens and Iga Swiatek. Stephens said such a thing would never happen on the WTA Tour, while Swiatek said it’s not good when a player gets a position on the advisory board while facing charges.

Alexander Zverev can play Roland Garros while facing charges

In 2021, Alexander Zverev‘s ex-girlfriend Olga Sharypova (a former Russian tennis player) alleged that Zverev was emotionally and physically abusive to her. Though she did not file a complaint.

Then in 2023, Zverev’s ex-girlfriend, Brenda Patea, accused the German of choking her during an argument. Zverev has denied all the allegations. A private investigation from the ATP did not find sufficient evidence.

Until the Berlin court finds him guilty, he will be considered innocent and so he is allowed to play at the Roland Garros. Sascha, when asked to comment on it during his campaign, said he won’t let the trial affect his matches, and that he believes the legal procedure will be in his favor.

Meanwhile, Zverev went past Tallon Griekspoor in a five-set thriller, winning with scores of 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6, (10-3). He is set to face Holger Rune in the fourth round, scheduled on June 3.
