British tennis ace Andy Murray has confirmed that he will not play in the singles event at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Instead, he will focus on the doubles event with Dan Evans. This is the second consecutive tournament where Murray has opted out of the singles event to prioritize the doubles.
At the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, Murray pulled out of the singles event citing issues with his body and played only in the men’s doubles, where he was knocked out in the first round. However, the Briton was expected to play in the singles in Paris after he confirmed that the Summer Games would be the final tennis tournament of his career.
However, against all expectations, Murray has announced that he will not compete in the singles at the Olympics.
I’ve taken the decision to withdraw from the singles to concentrate on the doubles with Dan. Really looking forward to getting started and representing GB one more time.Andy Murray was quoted as saying by James Gray
Murray and Evans are set to face the Japanese pair of Kei Nishikori and Taro Daniel in the first round.
Can Andy Murray make it count at 2024 Paris Olympics?
Having opted out of the singles event, Andy Murray is trying to give himself a chance to win the gold medal in the doubles. But can the Briton make it count? Murray, with his brother Jamie, could not make the most of the opportunity at Wimbledon and he lost in the first round.
Returning on clay with Dan Evans, the three-time Grand Slam champion faces a tough task. Although Muray has won three medals at the Games so far, he is not the same player any more thanks to injuries
Right before the Championships, the Briton underwent surgery on his back and his fitness levels have not yet been properly tested since then. It remains to be seen if opting out of the singles event will benefit the 37-year-old or not.
