Former World No.1 Andy Murray has put to bed all the rumored tensions between his camp and Emma Raducanu after her Wimbledon mixed doubles withdrawal. The former US Open champion was set to play with Murray in mixed doubles but withdrew at the last minute due to her commitment to singles.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Murray said that he is not bitter about Raducanu’s actions. The three-time Grand Slam champion also mentioned that he hasn’t spoken to the 21-year-old after her withdrawal.
Everyone is going to look out for their best interests and what it is that they do. I understand that, and I don’t have an issue with that. Getting to finish playing at Wimbledon on Centre Court with my brother was unbelievably special. That obviously wasn’t how I’d planned it. That’s how it ended up, and I’m really happy about that.Andy Murray said (H/T Tennis365)
Raducanu is one of many WTA stars who have opted against participating in the Olympic Games this year. She joins Ons Jabeur, Aryna Sabalenka, and Paula Badosa on the withdrawal list.
Andy Murray withdraws from singles to prioritize doubles at the Paris Olympics
Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray has pulled out of the tennis singles at the Paris Olympics. The two-time gold medal winner will instead play doubles with Dan Evans. This will be his last event before he retires.
I´ve taken the decision to withdraw from the singles to concentrate on the doubles with Dan. Our practice has been great and we´re playing well together. Really looking forward to getting started and representing GB one more time.Andy Murray said in his post-match press conference
Murray has not fully recovered from back surgery last month. He believes playing doubles with Evans gives him the best chance for another medal.
Murray won gold in singles at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics. He also won silver in mixed doubles with Laura Robson in 2012. His last singles match was in the second round at Queen’s Club against Jordan Thompson, where he had to quit because of a spinal cyst.
Murray announced his retirement after the Paris Olympics. He has struggled with injuries and is ranked 121st in the world. Since 2019, he has played with a metal hip and suffered ankle damage earlier this year.
