Andy Murray has grown up around animals all his life, and he had an interesting thing to share about one of them:

“My family always had dogs and I had a couple of hamsters when I was a kid. My first (hamster) was called Whisky but I lost him down the back of a sink! In our house, we had a sink in one of the bedrooms and I wrapped a duvet around the back of it to stop the hamster getting in when I let him out his cage to run around,” in an interview with DailyRecord.

“I don’t know how he got under the duvet but it got behind the sink and under the floorboards. I left out one of those humane mouse traps that would catch but not kill it if it came out the floorboards again. When I woke up the next morning, the bit of cheese was gone, the mousetrap hadn’t worked. It had got up there and got the food – and that was that,” he added.

Murray and his wife Kim currently own two dogs. Both are border terriers, named Maggie May and Rusty.

Andy Murray and WWF: “Some people find my passion funny, but I don’t.”

To his own admission, Andy finds it depressing when he hears stories of animal cruelty and wants to help in any way he can to rid the world of it. In this regard, he has been the global brand ambassador of WWF since 2014. He has since then taken his role in spreading awareness about the atrocities taking place against certain endangered species.

On his partnership with the WWF, he said, “I’ve done a number of things with charities, it’s quite a nice thing to do – and I love animals. I care as much about animals as I do about human beings. Some people find that funny but I don’t.”

“We’re all on this planet together and it’s horrible when you see what happens to some animals that are almost extinct. Animals don’t have a voice, human beings do, and it’s nice to try to help with that. I love my dogs and you can teach them to behave but if they decide they’re going to be naughty you just have to accept it. With people, it’s easier to discipline them and tell them the difference between right and wrong,” he added.

Murray also partnered with a sniffer dog program located in Nepal that trains sniffer dogs to help curb the poaching activity in the region. Apart from the WWF, he is also a part of many other charities, further showcasing his benevolent, giving nature.
