Andy Roddick thinks Andy Murray‘s chances at Wimbledon participation look slim after his back surgery spoiled his farewell plans. Earlier this year, Murray confirmed that the Wimbledon or the Olympics would be his last tournament.
Murray underwent surgery on his spinal cysts last Saturday after suffering the injury during his Queen’s Club Championships’ second-round match. He has started training and is doing everything he can to get his fitness back before arriving at SW19. Roddick opined that Murray doesn’t share Novak Djokovic‘s mindset, who a few days ago, made it clear that he will only play if he thinks he can win the final.
Unlike Novak, I don't think he needs to be perfect to have a send-off. I don't think it's like, 'I need to feel like I can win the tournament, or I'm not participating.' I don't think that would be his mindset. It's pure projection. I don't know. He's earned goodbye. He's earned every possible advantage, scheduling, and anything they can do to accommodate him.Andy Roddick said on his Served with Andy Roddick podcast
The Serb injured his right knee during his French Open campaign, which forced him to withdraw from the quarterfinals. He had the surgery and started training in Wimbledon.
Andy Murray reveals why he decided to undergo surgery
Andy Murray was dealing with the spinal cyst problem before playing at the Queen’s Club Championships. But the cyst back then was small and when it grew in size, the 37-year-old felt its effect as he lost coordination and strength on his right leg during his second-round match. And so he decided not to take more risks and had the operation.
I had a decent-sized cyst on my spinal cord which had been seen on a scan post French Open. It was pretty small, and it grew significantly in size over the next two to three weeks.Andy Murray said (via Daily Express)
Murray last played Wimbledon in 2023, when he made it to the second round but lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas. He won Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016. These are two of his three Grand Slam titles, having won the US Open as well in 2012. He is also an Olympic champion, winning the gold medal in 2012 and 2016 in singles.
The Wimbledon singles draw starts on Friday and the matches will start on July 1. Murray has a 61-13 win-loss record in grass-court majors. The World No. 115 is 6-12 on the season without a title. In the season’s second major event in Paris, Murray lost to Stan Wawrinka in the first round in straight sets.
