There was a bit of controversy when reports about Andy Murray‘s withdrawal from Wimbledon came out even before his announcement. Murray had surgery on his spinal cysts after an injury he suffered during his home event at Queen’s Club Championships.

The Brit’s name however was on the Wimbledon draws list, and he is set to play Tomas Machac in the first round on July 1. Former British No.1 Greg Rusedski, the last man from Britain to reach a major final before Murray, believes the 37-year-old has enjoyed a great career and has nothing to prove anymore.

Andy has nothing left to prove in this sport, he has done everything. It would be nice if he won a few rounds if he found a way to reach the second week, but it won't be easy, the draw will have to be favorable. He needs to start playing a little better. He's achieved everything in this sport, he's by far the best British player of the Open Era, so I hope the public enjoys him because we don't know how much longer we'll see him playing.
Greg Rusedski said during England’s Pickleball Slam event in Kingston

Murray is a former World No.1 and remained in the top position for 41 weeks. He won his first Grand Slam title in the 2012 US Open and lifted his next two major trophies at 2013 and 2016 Wimbledon. Apart from these majors, Murray is also a French Open finalist and has reached the Australian Open final five times.

Andy Murray vs Tomas Machac head-to-head record

Andy Murray, who also hasn’t planned to play beyond the Olympics, has got a tough first-round draw as his opponent Tomas Machac beat him the two times they met previously. Both the encounters came in 2024 and on hard court.

In their first meeting at the Marseille Open in the Round of 32, the 23-year-old Machac emerged victorious in straight sets. They then met in the ATP Masters 1000 Miami, which the World No. 38 won in three sets.

In the previous major event at Roland Garros, Murray could not reach the second round of it after Stan Wawrinka beat him in straight sets. At the Australian Open as well, the 37-year-old failed to go past the first round as Tomas Martin Etcheverry eliminated him in straight sets. If everything goes as planned, Murray will be playing his last Olympics in Paris on the Roland Garros courts.
