It was all looking good for the defending champion earlier in the match as she was 4-2 ahead in the first set and was in the ascendancy. However, Osaka was in for a battle and broke back. After that, it was Swiatek’s moment to play her best tennis under pressure as she fended off a set point in the 10th game. The tiebreaker was entirely dominated by the World No.1 as she won seven of the eight points to wrap up the first set.

The second set was pure dominance from Osaka. The former World No.1 showed the kind of form that made her win four Grand Slams and stay at the top of the WTA ranking three to four years ago. She dominated the second set to win 6-1.

In the third set, it looked like Osaka had the match in her hands when she was serving for it at 5-3. However, Swiatek remained cool under pressure and saved a match point to break back. The Polish star won the next three games as the Japanese icon crumbled.
