Judy Murray called Emma Raducanu‘s abrupt decision to pull out of the mixed doubles with Andy Murray at Wimbledon ‘astonishing’ and it triggered all sorts of reactions on social media. But now the mother of the two-time Wimbledon champion clarified what she meant by her two-word response.
Murray’s back surgery forced him to withdraw from the singles at the last moment and his doubles match with his brother Jamie Murray ended up being his last one at the SW19. The Murray brothers lost to John Peers and Rinky Hijikata in straight sets, after which, Murray received a tribute on the Centre Court.

Raducanu was set to play the mixed doubles on Saturday, but a wrist issue made her call off the match. When commentator Marcus Buckland called the move ‘astonishing’ on X, Judy agreed with him by simply writing, “Yes, astonishing.” The following day, Judy defended herself by saying that she wrote a sarcastic reply by pointing out how the scheduling of Raducanu’s match might have been the reason behind her decision.
Not sure anyone understands sarcasm these days. Pretty sure the scheduling (4th match court 1 with a singles the following day) will have played a major part in any decision-making.Judy Murray wrote on X

Raducanu is set to face New Zealand’s Lulu Sun in the Round of 16 on Sunday. It will be her second fourth-round match at the SW19.
Emma Raducanu pulled herself out of the mixed doubles match with Andy Murray to take care of herself
Emma Raducanu is no stranger to injuries. She had three surgeries on her wrists and an ankle last year, which made her miss tournaments one after the other. But now that she has got back her form and fitness, she suffered some stiffness in her wrist and to not exacerbate the injury, she deemed it best to take care of herself first.

Unfortunately, I woke up with some stiffness in my right wrist this morning, so, therefore, I have decided to make the very tough decision to withdraw from the mixed doubles tonight. I’m disappointed, as I was really looking forward to playing with Andy but I got to take care.Emma Raducanu told British media
The 21-year-old Raducanu made it to the Wimbledon fourth round in 2021 and the same year, she won the US Open as a qualifier. At this Wimbledon, she beat Renata Zarazua, Elise Mertens, and Maria Sakkari to reach the fourth round.
