In Short
  • Novak Djokovic last won a Grand Slam title at the 2023 US Open and has since lost two finals in 2024 and 2026.
  • Andy Murray believes Djokovic still has the potential to win another Major despite challenges with injuries and match preparation.
  • Djokovic aims to compete in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, having won his first Olympic gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Novak Djokovic, the man with the most Grand Slam titles, last won a trophy at this level at the 2023 US Open by defeating Daniil Medvedev. And since then, he has played two finals, at the 2024 Wimbledon and the 2026 Australian Open, losing both to Carlos Alcaraz.

Djokovic was last seen in action in the fourth round of the Indian Wells Masters, where Jack Draper defeated him in three sets. He then skipped the Miami Open and the Monte-Carlo Masters and will also not be playing the Madrid Open.

Last year, Djokovic, instead of participating in the Italian Open, participated in the Geneva Open and ended his title drought by beating Hubert Hurkacz. He won two titles last year, both in ATP 250 events.

In Majors last year, he reached every semifinal. While at the French Open and Wimbledon, Nole lost to Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz beat him at the US Open. At the Australian Open, an injury forced the Serb to hand the walkover to eventual runner-up Alexander Zverev. In Melbourne, Andy Murray was with him as his coach. During his interview with Sky Sports, the Scot said his former pupil still has it in him to win another Major.

I think that he can. The difficulty is when you get to the age that he’s at, if you play too much tennis, you risk injury, or not being fresh for the majors but then if you’re not competing enough and your body is not match-hardened and ready to play seven matches across two weeks, it is also very difficult physically.

Murray hung up his racquet at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and in about four months, he joined Djokovic’s team as his coach. But the partnership didn’t last for more than six months.

Last year, he made the semifinals of all four majors, but definitely had three injuries across those events and that’s the balancing act. It has to be perfect preparation with enough match play and enough training, but you could see at the Australian Open with the results that he had, beating Alcaraz last year and beating [Jannik] Sinner this year, that he still has the potential to do it.

Andy Murray added

Djokovic snapped his five-match losing streak against Sinner in the Australian Open semifinal, securing a five-set win. Later in the final, Alcaraz came from a set down to upset him.

Novak Djokovic is dreaming of playing the Los Angeles Olympics

Novak Djokovic has never shied away from admitting that he wants to play at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. He, in fact, wants to hang up his racket there.

At the 2024 Paris Olympics, the 38-year-old clinched a straight-set victory over Carlos Alcaraz and won his career’s first gold medal. The 24-time Grand Slam champion attended the Laureus award, where, during his interview with Olympics.com, he once again expressed his wish to play in the quadrennial event.

To be sharing that Olympic experience with 10,000 other athletes, the best athletes in the world… I hope I get to experience it another time. I’m really working on it. Two years seems a very long way for me now at this stage, but I’m working on it.

Djokovic has yet to win another Big Title since that Olympic gold medal. Since that win, he has reached two Masters 1000 finals and one Grand Slam final.

It’s uncertain whether he would be skipping the Italian Open like last year. During an interview, Djokovic said he is ready to play Roland Garros without any match practice on clay. The last time Djokovic won a title was at the 2025 Hellenic Championships by defeating Lorenzo Musetti.
