Former British tennis ace Andy Murray enjoyed a great rivalry with Serbian tennis legend Novak Djokovic. The two players have been sharing the court since they were 11 years old. While they were part of a fierce rivalry on the court, Murray and Djokovic enjoyed a great friendship off it and the Briton’s last tennis wish testifies to that.
After his retirement at the Paris Olympics, Murray was asked about his predictions for the final of the men’s singles event at the Games. With Djokovic set to play in his maiden Olympic final against Carlos Alcaraz, Murray sent his wishes to his rival-cum-friend.
The Briton said that he wants Djokovic to get the gold medal because of how much it means to him. Murray claimed that while Djokovic does not show too much emotion while playing for himself, the 37-year-old is very emotional about playing for his country.
I would like to see Novak Djokovic win the gold medal. It clearly means a lot to him. When he plays for Serbia in the Davis Cup, or the matches he played in the Olympic semi-finals, you can see that he cares a lot. He doesn’t always show as much emotion as other players, but when he plays for Serbia those emotions come out a lot more. It would be great if he could achieve that.Andy Murray said
Notably, the 24-time Grand Slam champion has won a solitary bronze medal (2008 Beijing) at the Summer Games so far.
Novak Djokovic excited to win a medal for his country
As Andy Murray pointed out, winning a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics would mean a lot to Novak Djokovic. It showed when the Serbian qualified for the final after defeating Lorenzo Musetti. He even announced that he would be going for the gold medal when he takes on Carlos Alcaraz.
The former World No. 1 also expressed delight at the fact that Serbia will have a medal in tennis regardless of how Djokovic performs in the final. Now, it is on him to decide the color of the medal, if it will be silver or gold.
He will be facing reigning Roland Garros and Wimbledon champion Alcaraz. The Spaniard got the better of Djokovic when they met in the Wimbledon final last month. It is to be seen if a similar fate will be repeated or if the Serbian changes things to sign off on a high at the Olympics.
