Two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray is in serious danger of withdrawing from Wimbledon this year after a catastrophic last few days at the Queen’s Club. The 37-year-old retired from his Round of 16 clash against Jordan Thompson in the ATP 500 event.
Murray’s status for SW19 is still unknown. However, his brother Jamie Murray has given an update on the three-time Grand Slam champion’s condition before Wimbledon, while speaking to the BBC.
He [Andy] saw a specialist yesterday evening and he’s basically trying to decide what his next move is. I don’t think it’s right for me to go into that personally, that’s up to him, but I think he has got a few decisions to make.Jamie Murray on BBC
Murray has been confirmed for the 2024 Paris Olympics as he will return to Roland Garros for most likely his final games. He lost in the first round against Stanislas Wawrinka at this year’s French Open in the battle of the veterans.
It’s obviously incredibly disappointing for him that this was potentially going to be his last Queen’s, last Wimbledon and Olympics, and there’s a potential that that might not be able to happen. I think he’s got to make a few decisions, and see where he goes from there.Jamie Murray added
However, with his back injury a huge talking point in the past few days, it remains unclear whether the Scottish legend will be available for his Roland Garros return, let alone Wimbledon. The tennis world is keeping its fingers crossed.
Andy Murray set to headline Great Britain’s roster for the Paris Olympics
Two-time Olympic Gold medalist Andy Murray has accepted an ITF place for what might be his final Olympic Games in Paris at the age of 37. The Scottish legend has revealed that he’s not prioritized playing tennis beyond this summer.
Murray has also been nominated alongside Dan Evans for the men’s doubles event in Paris, with his participation potentially contingent on the opportunity to compete in the team event. Apart from his two singles Gold Medals, Murray has won an Olympic Silvers medal in mixed doubles with Laura Robson.
On the other hand, Emma Raducanu has declined an opportunity to represent Great Britain at this year’s Olympics, citing her current low ranking due to ongoing recovery from wrist and ankle surgeries last year. Despite being offered a spot reserved for former Grand Slam champions by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the 21-year-old opted to focus on her return to form during the British grass-court season after skipping the French Open.
