The Murray-Fognini rivalry

Fabio Fognini and Andy Murray had a controversial spat at the Shanghai Masters in 2019 when Fabio Fognini shouted while Andy Murray was taking a volley which distracted Murray and sent him into wild rage. Murray argued with the chair umpire and asked Fognini to shut up. Fognini won the match in 3 sets.

Fabio Fognini mentioned about his feud with Andy Murray in his book and said that he thought that the Brit was arrogant and they never had a good relationship. Fognini wrote in his book, “Murray and I never got along. We are two hotheads and we lose our cool pretty quickly. When we are on court, we despise each other.Andy Murray was arrogant since young age. A guy all lobs and dropshots, tricky shots designed to mock you.”

Another fierce battle between Murray and Fognini was at 2017 Wimbledon in the 3rd round where Andy Murray beat Fognini in 4 sets. In the 4th set with Murray leading 2 sets to 1, Fognini was up 5-2 in the 4th set before Murray came back and won 5 games in a row clinching the set 7-5 and the match in 4 sets.

Fognini’s statement makes one reflect on one of the most pre-eminent enmities of modern tennis. Further, they have an extremely competitive head-to-head with each of them aceing an equal of 4 victories across their 8 career encounters against each other.

Hence, with their craggy relation now been revealed, the duo’s next battle is eagerly awaited. Their next expected face-off is at the French Open 2020 as Murray is not playing at the Rome Masters due to low ranks. The Briton star has, however, won a wild card to the long yearned Roland Garros.

French Open 2020 kicks off on September 27 and the 33-year old is expected to present his best and ace fires against his arch rival.
