The former World No.1, Andy Murray, has three Grand Slam titles to his name. Murray is often counted amongst one of the all-time greats. Further, he attained dominance during the reign of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. The Scot lifted the title in Antwerp in 2019 after undergoing a hip surgery earlier that year.

Murray was originally slated to kick start the upcoming season by appearing at the Delray Beach Open. This is an ATP 250 tournament and is scheduled to take place from 7-13 January, 2021. However, the 33-year-old has now opted to not compete here due to the rise in Covid-19 cases in Florida.

Murray can’t risk his chances at the Australian Open

The two-time Wimbledon champ has scraped his plans to fly out to the United States. Murray, who was given a wildcard, has not cited any fitness reasons which affect his ability to make the journey. Hence, he won’t be seen at the season-opening ATP Tour event.

In addition, Florida has become the third state in the U.S to surpass one million coronavirus cases. This has forced the hand of every tournament organisation to enforce strict regulations. Therefore, if any player contracts the virus, they could be banned from partaking at the maiden Grand Slam of the year, i.e, the Australian Open 2021. This is partly due to the strict regulations that came in place after much deliberations between Tennis Australia and the Victorian government.

Murray is focused on attaining his stride back at the Majors after suffering early-round defeats at the U.S Open and the French Open in 2020.

Currently ranked at No.122, Andy will most likely be seen on court when the Australian Open commences from 8 February.
