Two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray will play only doubles at his last appearance in his home Grand Slam. The Briton’s participation in the singles has been in doubt for a few days and he was expected to decide on the same by the end of Monday (July 1).

With his first-round match against Tomas Machac set to get underway in a couple of hours, Murray has officially pulled out of the singles. He had picked a back injury at the Queen’s Club Championships during his Round Of 16 match against Jordan Thompson. 

Since then, there have been doubts about his Wimbledon participation. Despite daily practice, it looks like Murray is not 100% fit to take part in the singles. He will, however, take part int he doubles at SW19, where he will partner his brother Jamie Murray.

The 37-year-old has suffered quite some injuries before as well. Back in 2013, he had a back surgery, which was a big turnaround in his career. Moreover, he had hip surgeries in 2018 and 2019, which did not allow Murray to get back to his 100%. Earlier this year, he suffered an ankle injury which was treated before the Cinch Championships but suffered another back injury.

Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios had recently shared his views about Andy Murray’s current situation. In an interview, he suggested that Murray should consider his long-term health and not compete at Wimbledon after this year.

It pains me to see him. . .and these are not small injuries. They’re injuries that can actually affect your life moving forward with your family. . .so it’s just like, at this point this should be, in my opinion, his last Wimbledon. He’s achieved everything you could possibly achieve.

Unfortunately, the 2-time Wimbledon champion will miss the singles tournament for probably the last time, but he will still continue his farewell at Wimbledon by competing in the doubles alongside his brother.

This is not the end for Murray, who will compete at the upcoming Paris Olympics. He recently declared that he will play doubles alongside Dan Evans. This might be his farewell tournament and the tennis world will have to witness another one of the biggest names hang their racket.
