Liverpool clashed against Crystal Palace at home with the aim to maintain their position at the top of the table. Unfortunately they were handed their first loss at home of the season by Crystal Palace.
They won with the scoreline of 0-1 thanks to an incredible team goal by Eberechi Eze in the 14th minute. Palace were close to get the score 2-0, but Andy Robertson ensured that the lead couldn’t be doubled and ensured his team was still in the game.
In the 17 minute, Palace set off into a counter attack, and Virgil Van Dijk prepared himself to defend. Luckily for Jean-Philippe Mateta, the Liverpool captain slipped and fell. Mateta had to go one-on-one with Alisson Becker and got the ball past him as well. Robertson sprinted and managed to keep the ball out of the net.
Unfortunately, the save wasn’t enough as Liverpool failed to score a single goal. The hosts had 21 shots and managed only 6 on target, while Palace tried for 8 shots, hitting 5 on target. A brilliant defensive effort by the visitors made sure Liverpool dropped points in the title race.
Fans praise Andy Robertson for his brilliant defensive effort
Fans were in awe of Andy Robertson’s brilliant defensive action that ensured Liverpool were still in the match. Many fans believed that goal-line clearance kept Liverpool in the match and still in the title race. Some were afraid Virgil van Dijk had a Steven Gerrard moment referencing his infamous slip in 2014 which led to Liverpool missing out on the Premier League title.
Check out their reactions:
Liverpool lost their first match at home in the league. Thanks to Palace, Arsenal and Manchester United were handed a massive boost for their title charge as well. Liverpool now stand third in the league, tied on points with Arsenal but behind on goal difference. Arsenal also have a game in hand and will play Aston Villa.
Just a few days before Liverpool were thrashed by Atalanta in the UEFA Europa League quarter finals. That loss means they go into the 2nd leg fixture with a deficit. They will now travel to Italy and play Atalanta on 18th April.
