Mirra Andreeva won the biggest title of her career at the Dubai Tennis Championship making her a WTA 1000 champion. The 17-year-old teenager stunned the tennis world at the tournament beating former World No.1 Iga Swiatek en route to the title. American legend Andy Roddick believes she will be WTA No.1 one day.
Andreeva has impressed on all surfaces so far in her young career. The teenager made a name for herself last year by defeating Aryna Sabalenka to reach the semifinals of the French Open. This season she took her game to a whole new level at the Dubai Tennis Championship, where she defeated three Grand Slam champions.
She defeated Marketa Vondrousova in the second round of the tournament before prevailing over Swiatek in the quarterfinals in straight sets. She then fought hard to beat Elena Rybakina in the semifinals. The victory at the WTA 1000 event helped her climb to World No.9 in the women’s rankings.
Nonetheless, Roddick revealed during an episode of his podcast that Andreeva was going to be WTA No.1 one day. He added that her style of play and movement on the court is beyond her years.
Andreeva is going to be number one in the world at some point. I watched her more this week continuously – because normally it’s in a Slam. But she serves so much better than people give her credit for and it’s only going to get better. She is an elite mover already; she creates enough pace, and what I am going to talk about is that nobody does. Her ability to play against people’s movements makes her shots bigger. She doesn’t have to go big to go through you.

Andreeva already has a 13-3 win-loss record this season, one of the best in the women’s circuit. She will be on the court again at the Indian Wells Masters, where she suffered a first-round defeat against Katie Volynets last year.
Andy Roddick supports Reilly Opelka despite controversial statement about mixed doubles players
Reilly Opelka recently got himself in the heart of a major controversy in tennis. The American star reacted negatively to the new US Open mixed doubles format, which angered a few fans. However, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Paula Badosa have already indicated their interest in playing in the new format.

The new format will see the mixed doubles reduced from 32 pairs to 16 and will be played a week before the major draw of the US Open. Andy Roddick reacted to Opelka saying that doubles players are failed single players.
Opelka love him or hate him, you rarely have to wonder what he is thinking and he is certainly not scared to tell you what he is thinking. So regardless of whether you agree with his opinion, I kind of like characters like Reilly who will just say what they think.

Opelka has already earned eight wins this season, with the biggest of them coming against Novak Djokovic at the Brisbane International. The American also reached the final in Brisbane but failed to win the title.
