According to Andy Roddick, Alexander Zverev is in a weird place following the Australian Open final. Sascha was bidding to win his first Major but was defeated by Jannik Sinner in straight sets.

This made Zverev a three-time Major finalist, following the 2020 US Open and the 2024 French Open. Roddick thinks despite being one of the best and winning matches one after the other, one defeat is considered a failure.

Imagine you then winning that competition for two weeks and then losing to one person and people going that’s a failure. That’s a weird place to be, and that is kind of where Zverev is right now.

Andy Roddick said on his Served with Andy Roddick podcast

An emotional Zverev, after the defeat, was inconsolable and expressed his doubt about ever winning a Grand Slam title in his career. 2003 US Open champion Roddick, who was defeated in four Majors finals by Roger Federer, doesn’t want critics to call Zverev a failed player.

I hate the position for him because he is professional; he is always fit, he does all the things that you would want a top player to do.

Andy Roddick added

In Zverev’s previous two Grand Slam finals, Dominic Thiem overcame him in five sets in the 2020 US Open, while in the 2024 French Open, Carlos Alcaraz beat him in five sets. He has never reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.

Kim Clijsters shares different reactions of Alexander Zverev and Aryna Sabalenka after their Australian Open defeat

While Alexander Zverev was devastated after the one-sided Australian Open final, World No.2 Aryna Sabalenka laughed and joked after failing to complete the threepeat at Melbourne Park. She was denied the historic victory by Madison Keys, who lifted her career’s first major with a three-set win.

Former WTA pro from Belgium, Kim Clijsters, was curious about Zverev’s reaction as she claimed, while training, players are taught to suppress negative emotions. She compared his reaction to that of Sabalenka, who tried to raise her spirits.

You saw him. There was a moment Sinner went over to him and talked to him for a little bit. You could see how disappointed he was. It’s different. You see Sabalenka, she’s laughing, she’s kinda joking to her team.

Kim Clijsters said on Served with Andy Roddick podcast

Unlike Zverev, Sabalenka is a three-time Grand Slam singles champion. Apart from her two singles Majors in Melbourne, she clinched in 2023 and 2024, the Belarusian also lifted the 2024 US Open.
