Coco Gauff dealt with ups and downs this season as not only did she reach finals and win titles, but also suffered early round exits. But Andy Roddick overlooked her disappointing runs as he foresees nothing but a bright future for his compatriot.

This season, Gauff made it to four finals. After multiple early round exits, Gauff progressed to the title clash of the Madrid Open only to suffer defeat at the hands of Aryna Sabalenka. The 21-year-old made it to two more finals on the clay swing.

In the Italian Open final, she failed to beat home favorite Jasmine Paolini. But at the French Open, she got her revenge over Sabalenka, winning the match in three sets to clinch her career’s second Grand Slam singles title.

But she struggled again when the grass swing started, as she failed to win a single set in the two tournaments she played. Gauff did not reach another final before the Wuhan Open, where she defeated Jessica Pegula to win her career’s third WTA 1000 title. Roddick, on his Served podcast, lauded her for her never-give-up attitude.

It does not matter how much we see her struggle. We have to give credit where credit is due for Coco Gauff at some point. If the losses are ugly, I don’t care. She is the best in the world at being uncomfortable on a given day and getting a win.

Gauff also booked a spot at the WTA Finals for the fourth consecutive time. She was playing the year-end championships as the defending champion, but she failed to reach the semifinals after losing to eventual runner-up Sabalenka and Pegula in the round-robin stage.

We are going to talk about how she is able to settle in. How she is able to apply her game? How she is able to create errors and stress for her opponent, to rely on her legs. She has one of the biggest and hardest backhands in the world that people do not talk about enough. She is able to work the forehand to drive traffic. She sets up her defense with patterns. It is not an accident.

Andy Roddick praises Coco Gauff’s consistency

Coco Gauff, despite tough competition, has managed to remain a top-three player for the last couple of years. Andy Roddick lauded the two-time Grand Slam singles champion for being consistent in spite of her serving problems.

To go through things that are physically and mentally not working and to get through it and win consistently is a superpower. There is no world where anyone else on earth can be dealing with 20 or 25 double faults, and we are looking up and at scale, not for a tournament, every year she is two in the world, three in the world. She does not leave those positions.

Andy Roddick said on his Served podcast

The next big event is the Australian Open, where Gauff has never reached the final. The World No.3 made it to the semifinals last year, losing the match to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka.

This year, Gauff suffered a straight-set defeat at the hands of Paula Badosa in the quarterfinals. But before the first Major of the season, Gauff will be participating in the United Cup, where she will aim to help Team USA defend its crown.
