- Elena Rybakina lost to Aryna Sabalenka in the Indian Wells final despite holding a championship point.
- Andy Roddick sent a supportive message to Rybakina, emphasizing her strong performance this season.
- Rybakina will next compete at the Miami Open, aiming for her first title at the tournament.
Elena Rybakina has reached two tournament finals this season and four since last October. Only Aryna Sabalenka has reached more finals than the Kazakhstan star in that same period. American legend Andy Roddick, who has been a big supporter of Rybakina, sent a heartfelt message to her following her Indian Wells final loss.
Rybakina claimed her second Grand Slam earlier this season at the Australian Open. She dropped just one set en route to the title, defeating Sabalenka in the final. The 26-year-old was on course to achieve those same standards at the Indian Wells last week, a tournament she won in 2023.
She reached the final, dropping just one set, and was a strong favorite to win the tournament. But Rybakina lost to Sabalenka in the final of the Indian Wells despite holding a championship point in the deciding tiebreak. The loss now makes the rivalry between Sabalenka and Rybakina better on tour.
Rybakina has won three of their five meetings and leads 4-2 against the Belarusian star in finals. But Sabalenka ultimately holds a slim lead in their head-to-head record, 9-7 on tour. After the defeat, Rybakina noted that she was not at her best in the match due to humid conditions on the day of the event.
Nonetheless, Rybakina’s run in Indian Wells means she has reached the quarter-finals of every tournament she has played in this season. Speaking in the latest episode of the Served podcast, Andy Roddick offered insights into the mindset he believes the Kazakhstani should adopt going forward into the rest of the season:
If you’re Rybakina, you might think, ‘I finished the year better than anyone last year, I won the Australian Open, I only lost to Sabalenka here.’ If you’re in her camp, you think you’re definitely on her level right now. We can debate it and delve into the statistics, but if I were her coach, I’d tell her, ‘You’re there. You might even be better right now.’ That’s what I’d say. She’s clearly not afraid of tough matches. She doesn’t put pressure on herself beforehand.
Rybakina will now focus on the Miami Open, a tournament she has never won. She’s in the same top half of the draw as Sabalenka and could potentially face the World No.1 in the semi-finals. But before that, there’s a possibility that she might face American star Jessica Pegula in the last eight.
Andy Roddick praise Jannik Sinner for his “statement” triumph at the Indian Wells Open
Jannik Sinner made his critics swallow their words at the Indian Wells Open. Before arriving at the tournament, some analysts had noted that he was going through a period of crisis and might not meet the standards he set last year and in 2024. But he proved them wrong at the California desert, beating Daniil Medvedev to win the Indian Wells.

He didn’t drop a set at the tournament and was at his best throughout the tournament. During the aforementioned conversation, Andy Roddick revealed that Sinner’s statement win at the Indian Wells Open was a solid one. The American legend added that he will be full of confidence heading into the Miami Open:
He beat a mix of younger players and veterans. He won matches comfortably, won tight matches in tiebreaks, and gutted out the final without losing a set. Not that he needs to make statements at this point in his career, but that’s a really solid win. He’s got to be thrilled heading into Miami, where he’s essentially a defending champion — he didn’t play last year, but won it the year before.
Sinner didn’t participate in the Miami Open last year due to his doping suspension, which allows him to earn more ranking points. He faced a tough task at the tournament, which he won in 2024, as he will face Damir Dzumhur or a qualifier in the second round before a potential clash with Corentin Moutet in the third.
