Coco Gauff will head to the 2025 Wimbledon Championship as American No.1 after clinching her second Grand Slam at Roland Garros. However, former World No.1 Andy Roddick has snubbed the 21-year-old as his American women’s favorite player to win the upcoming edition of the grass-court Grand Slam.
American women’s players have performed exceptionally this season. It is for this reason that four American players feature in the top 10 of the WTA rankings. Also, this year, the two Grand Slams in the women’s singles have been won by players from the United States of America. At the Australian Open, Madison Keys lifted the title after beating Aryna Sabalenka in three sets in the final.
At the French Open, it was Gauff’s turn to lift the silverware as she came from behind to beat Sabalenka in three sets. Keys and Gauff are the two American stars, who are favorites to win the Wimbledon Championship. However, the former suffered a 5-7, 6(8)-7 loss to Marketa Vondrousova in the first round of the Berlin Open, although she reached the semi-finals of the Queen’s Club Championships.
Meanwhile, Gauff was stunned on her return to action after winning the Roland Garros, losing to Chinese qualifier Xinyu Wang 3-6, 3-6 in Berlin. The World No.2 amassed 25 unforced errors and seven double faults in her loss to Wang. Gauff had a bye to the second round at the grass-court tournament.
Following the two American stars’ struggle on the court, Andy Roddick on Tennis Channel picked Keys over Gauff as the American women’s player to win the 2025 Wimbledon Championship:
So, draws aside, which believes it or not plays a huge part in tournaments, but I like Madison Keys from the American side. I think she is my favorite. I think she is well-versed on the grass. She had good results. She was heading towards a big result last year before she got hurt against Paolini. Since then, she has won a Grand Slam. I think she is going to be much comfortable in that scenario.
Keys does not have an excellent record at Wimbledon, despite having featured in the main draw ten times in her career. She has never managed to advance past the quarter-finals stage. Last year, her journey ended in the fourth round after retiring due to an injury against runner-up Jasmine Paolini.
Andy Roddick predicts how far Jessica Pegula will go at the Wimbledon Championship
Jessica Pegula is yet to make a strong Grand Slam statement this season. Last year, she did make a statement by reaching the US Open final for the first time in her career, defeating Iga Swiatek en route to that stage. This year, she has not gone beyond the fourth round of a Grand Slam.

She opened her grass-court season with a shocking three-set loss against Liudmila Samsonova in the second round. However, Andy Roddick predicted during the aforementioned conversation that she would have a big run at the Wimbledon Championship:
I do think Jessica Pegula has a big run at Wimbledon ahead of her. I know she kind of let that lead get away from her against [Marketa] Vondrousova the year she won but listen, the US women can play on this stuff for sure.
However, Pegula has time to get into the right form ahead of the Wimbledon Championship as she’s set to compete at Bad Homburg, which kicks off next Monday. The Charleston Open champion will kick off her campaign in Bad Homburg in the second round after earning a first-round bye. Also, she’s projected to face fellow American Emma Navarro in the quarter-finals of the tournament and Amanda Anisimova in the semi-finals.
