Former World No. 1 Andy Roddick has made a prediction about Coco Gauff’s potential new coach. The 2023 US Open champion fired her coach, Brad Gilbert, earlier this month after a disappointing autumn spell.
Gilbert announced the split on his X account. Gauff has yet to announce her new coach, but speculation is growing, with Roddick being one of the main guys creating those speculations.
Obviously, out of the gates, it was a stunning success [between Gauff and Gilbert]. You would trade all of the tough moments for that US Open win. I don’t think that I was shocked. It’s been a bit of a rough year. What I’m curious about moving forward is whether there is going to be a co-coach situation. Is there going to be a name-brand coach? Is this something that she enjoyed looking back, or was the attention to the relationship a net negative?Andy Roddick said on Tennis Channel
Gilbert played a key role in Gauff’s breakthrough on the tennis circuit. Under his guidance, the American won the 2023 US Open and reached the semifinals of both the Australian Open and Roland Garros earlier this year.
I don’t think she’d be in a rush to do anything because J.C. Farell is in her corner, and she’s comfortable there. Your guess is as good as mine. I don’t think she’s going to be in a rush to fix it immediately.Andy Roddick added
However, the decline in results after Wimbledon raised concerns. Despite being seen as a flag bearer for USA tennis, Gauff fell short of expectations in Paris, leaving the Olympic city without a medal. The poor results continued with an early loss in Cincinnati and the US Open, which ultimately led to Gilbert’s dismissal.
Maria Sharapova shares advice for Coco Gauff on new coaching partnership
Russian tennis legend Maria Sharapova has put down any concerns surrounding Coco Gauff‘s new coach. Gauff, the former US Open champion, put an end to her partnership with Brad Gilbert earlier this month.
I think Coco has an amazing head on her shoulders and knows that there will be changes in her team throughout the years. What you need at a certain point in your career is not what you need later in your career. I was very fortunate with the teams that I had. I still remain very close to all of my coaches.Maria Sharapova said on US Weekly
Sharapova’s rise to the top of women’s tennis was pretty much the same as Gauff’s. The Russian won the 2004 Wimbledon at the age of only 17 before adding four more Grand Slams for the remainder of her career. Moreover, she clinched the Olympic Silver medal in the 2012 London Olympics.
They’re such big team members and they carry so much weight. A team is really important. It takes time to build trust and learn from [your team] and accept their advice. But it’s a fun journey.Maria Sharapova added
Although Gauff was able to achieve Grand Slam success last year in New York, she has failed to gain a move on. The 2024 season has been dominated by Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka and Gauff doesn’t look to be close to their tennis standards, at least currently.
Both Swiatek and Sabalenka have won three of the four Grand Slams this season. They have also won four Masters 1000 titles combined this year.
