Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou responded to criticism aimed at his managerial decisions, during the club’s narrow 2-1 win over Coventry in the EFL Cup. The Australian manager was booed by fans, after he decided to substitute youngster Lucas Bergvall during the match.

Ange Postecoglou has been on the receiving end of criticism, after Tottenham’s tough start to the new EPL season, losing back-to-back matches against Newcastle and Arsenal. The club most recently secured a last-gasp win over Coventry City, through goals from Djed Spence and Brennan Johnson in the dying minutes. However, the manager received boos from fans over his decision to substitute Bergvall for James Maddison in the 62nd minute, immediately after which they conceded a goal.

Speaking to reporters after the match, the Australian manager however, hit back at critics by stating that he does not make team changes by conducting polls. Moreover, he highlighted that he did not wish to overburden players, a reason for which he replaced the 18-year-old midfielder after half-time. Describing Bergvall’s performance as outstanding, Postecoglou also stated that there were a lot of players on the bench who could make an impact, something the team needed against Coventry.

I don’t make substitutions by poll mate. So, I’m sure the fans have got their own opinions. What I didn’t want was us pushing guys over the edge today. I thought he [Lucas] was outstanding tonight.

The 59-year-old former Celtic manager had also made eight changes to the starting XI, something that was also criticized. Spurs have some challenging fixtures ahead of them, starting with Brentford, followed by Qarabag in the UEL, and Manchester United, next weekend.

Tottenham’s chances of winning a trophy this season could have hit a major roadblock, as they were on the verge of collapsing against Coventry. The Australian manager stated that the club had to hang in to stay in the match until the last minute, but praised the team’s spirit and character after the win. He also took blame for the team’s lack cohesiveness, as well as for making too many changes.

We showed some real spirit and character. Look, we weren't very fluent tonight or cohesive. When you make a lot of changes, that's on me. We weren't as fluent, certainly performance-wise.

With this win, Tottenham have now proceeded past the 3rd round of the Carabao Cup. The club will also be hoping to return to winning ways in the EPL, after losing against city-rivals Arsenal in the North London derby last week.
