Ange Postecoglou signed for Tottenham Hotspur in June of last year. The Australian manager inspired his side to a fifth place finish in the 2023/24 campaign, although many expected him to bring silverware in his first season. As Spurs head into their second season under Postecoglou, the 58-year-old has made a bold claim.

Spurs kicked off their Premier League campaign on Monday night against newly promoted side Leicester City. Despite their best efforts, Spurs were held to a 1-1 draw as fans expressed their frustration with the result.

Usually in my second season I win things.

Ange Postecoglou said in a press conference

Fans laughed at the manager after Spurs dropped points. They shared clips of a frustrated Ange Postecoglou bent down with his hands on his knees during the game. The manager claimed that Spurs started off strong, but failed to convert their chances.

He then added that Spurs lost their ‘composure’ once the crowd started cheering for their opponents.

Tottenham drop points in exciting encounter against Leicester

Jamie Vardy and co. announced their return to the Premier League with a bang. Even though Spurs and Leicester City shared the spoils, goals from Pedro Porro and Vardy meant that both sides left with something from King Power Stadium. It was all one-way traffic in the first half, with shots from Brennan Johnson, Rodrigo Bentancur and Dominic Solanke all narrowly missing the target.

The visitors finally took the lead through Porro, whose glancing header evaded Mads Hermansen‘s reach. Tottenham’s lead was eventually cut out by an unmarked Vardy, who did very well to guide the ball past Guglielmo Vicario, although it was into an unguarded net. Following the game, Postecoglou said that his side have to do better if they are to bridge the gap between them and the top teams.

Postecoglou took complete responsibility for the result, but stated that his side’s struggles in front of goal are a continuation of last year. Many fans claimed that Spurs have not yet managed to find Harry Kane‘s ‘replacement’, with Solanke not living up to his billing on the opening matchday. Following the draw, Spurs will now take on Everton on the 24th of August.
