Argentine forward Angel Di Maria had a surprising reaction to his former Real Madrid teammate, Cristiano Ronaldo‘s ‘GOAT’ claim. The 37-year-old showed his preference for his 2022 World Cup winning mate Lionel Messi, over the Portuguese forward.
Angel Di Maria is one of the few footballers to have played alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. He starred with Ronaldo at Real Madrid between 2010 and 2014, helping the club win its 10th UCL title. Meanwhile, he shared the dressing room with Lionel Messi at Argentina since their youth days, having won three trophies, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Having received the opportunity to play with two of them, the 37-year-old Benfica man does know a lot about the two attackers. Di Maria most recently, responded to Cristiano Ronaldo’s ‘GOAT’ claims. The Al-Nassr skipper labeled himself as the best player in the history of football, while confidently claiming that no one is a ‘better’ or ‘more complete’ player than him.
Angel Di Maria: “I played with him (Cristiano Ronaldo) at Real Madrid for 4 years. He’s always been like this, striving to be the best. But unfortunately for him he was born in the wrong generation. This is Lionel Messi's generation & Messi is the best." 😂😂 pic.twitter.com/tYzGpaKNXb

Angel Di Maria expressed surprise at Ronaldo’s claims, as he gave a resounding verdict on who he thinks is the greatest. The Argentine star went on to exclaim that Ronaldo has tried his best to live up to the standards of Lionel Messi, but has failed to do so. He added that Messi’s numbers highlight his superiority, as well as his World Cup and Ballon d’Or triumphs make him ‘the best’ player in history.
He [Ronaldo] always made those statements, he always tried to be the best, but he was born in the same generation as [Messi]… The reality is shown in numbers. One has eight Ballon d’Ors, the other five.

Nonetheless, Angel Di Maria’s time with his Argentinian teammate Lionel Messi has come to an end, after having retired at the end of the 2024 Copa America. Di Maria currently plays for Benfica, and has been brilliant with 14 goals and seven assists this season.
