Veteran forward Angel Di Maria has reportedly not agreed upon terms with Inter Miami, despite media reports indicating a move to the MLS side. A transfer to the USA would see Di Maria re-unite with Lionel Messi, who captains the Herons.

The 36-year old player, whose contract with his current side Benfica comes to an end this month, is being targeted by the South Beach MLS side. His addition to the Herons’ lineup would bolster their attack, which already features the likes of Messi and ex-Barcelona star Luis Suarez. Di Maria and Messi are longtime friends on the Argentina national team, and they also played together at club level with PSG. Both of them are now a part of the national side at the Copa America.

Despite initial reports indicating that Di Maria was approached by Inter Miami, there have reportedly been no developments in the transfer process. Journalist Fabrizio Romano also reported that the player had not agreed terms with Inter Miami. Moreover, in an interview a month ago, Herons’ manager Gerardo Martino had also played down the possibility of signing new players, keeping in mind the strict economic and roster sanctions of the MLS.

Di Maria’s future remains uncertain, and any decision upon it would come only after the Copa America. Inter Miami would have to offload certain players, generating funds and freeing up salary space in order to make room for Di Maria.

Angel Di Maria to retire from international football after the 2024 Copa America

36-year old Argentinean star Angel Di Maria, in what would be his last dance, had confirmed last year that he would retire from the national team at the end of the 2024 Copa America.

Since making his debut in 2008, Di Maria has made over 130 appearances for Argentina, appearing in four World Cups and scoring in the 2022 final victory over France. The ex-PSG winger also scored the match-winning goal to defeat Brazil in the Copa America final last time. Di Maria partnered with Lionel Messi for almost a decade to form one of the deadliest attacking units in South America.

He returned to Portuguese giants Benfica last year, the club he previously played for between 2007 and 2010. The winger has also played for Real Madrid, PSG, Juventus, and Manchester United.
