Angel Reese claims women’s basketball fame is ‘because of me, too!’, accepts negative fame

Angel Reese claims she is also responsible for the growth in popularity of the WNBA, not just Caitlin Clark

Angel Reese is one of the most popular women’s basketball players to come out of college. Even though she was a good player at LSU, her popularity skyrocketed after taunting Caitlin Clark in the NCAA Championship game. The Chicago Sky forward believes that negativity has helped increase the WNBA’s fame.

Essentially Angel Reese summed it up that the rise in women’s basketball is because of her rivalry with Caitlin Clark. She feels without herself in the picture it would not have been this big.

Negative things have probably been said about me. But honestly, I'll take that because look where women's basketball is. People are pulling up to games, we got celebrities to games, sold out arenas. And just looking at that, I'll take that role. I'll take the bad guy role. I'll look back in 20 years and be like 'The reason why we watch women's basketball is not just because of one person, it's because of me too'.

Reese believes that had it been just Caitlin Clark then only games involving her, and her Indiana Fever would be the most watched games in the WNBA. However, as Reese and her Chicago Sky have seemingly reignited their college rivalry, the entire sporting world’s attention is now on the women’s game.

Caitlin Clark, Chennedy Carter, and Angel Reese have been the most talked about topics in all of sports since Carter bodied Clark in their game on June 1st. Therefore, she does not mind the negativity if it is helping the sport reach new audiences.

Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark’s rivalry is what the WNBA needs

When Caitlin Clark burst onto the scene with her incredible scoring, the basketball world was in awe. Then came the NCAA National Championship game in 2023 and suddenly the entire sporting world was shaken up. The reason was that Angel Reese and her LSU Tigers proceeded to taunt Clark and trash-talk their way to winning the title.

The sporting world was disappointed with the NCAA after announcing their brackets for this year’s March Madness. They wanted another LSU vs. Iowa matchup just to watch these two go head-to-head. When it eventually happened, it broke the viewership record of last year’s Championship game. This means the WNBA will anyways benefit from Clark in their league. But it would be better if Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark had a rivalry to showcase to the world.

Something akin to what Magic Johnson and Larry Bird had back in the 80’s, which sent the popularity of the NBA skyrocketing. The effect it already showing, Clark and her Indiana Fever games in Chicago have some of the most expensive tickets throughout the WNBA.
