The Chicago Sky are going through a rough 2025 WNBA season thus far. But they received a positive jolt after beating the Connecticut Sun on the back of a two-way performance. Angel Reese recorded her first WNBA career triple-double as the two struggling teams faced off in a Commissioner’s Cup fixture. The Sky improved to 3-7 on the season and notched up their second road win this year with this game.

Hailey van Lith top scored for the Sky, coming off the bench and dropping 16 points. The former Louisville and LSU guard had an efficient shooting night, going 6-8 from the field. She also had a whopping +23 +/- in a game decided by a 12-point margin. Former Sky player Marina Mabrey had 22 points for the Sun, whose anemic offense has caused them to have a steep decline in the 2025 season.

Despite having another rough shooting night as she went 2-7 from the field, Angel Reese had her prints all over the game. She earned seven free throws and made all of them. Her 11 points added to her 13 rebounds and 11 assists marked this game as the most complete performance of her young career. She also played a team-high 36 minutes and displayed great defensive instincts to go with her triple-double.

Marina Mabrey had an acrimonious exit from the Sky in 2024, alleging locker room dysfunction after landing in Connecticut. This probably led to a charged atmosphere and increased physicality during the game. Sun forward Bria Hartley got tangled up with Reese as she attempted to get a rebound on defense. Angel Reese reacted by getting into a shoving match with Hartley, alleging that her hair was pulled.

Hartley was ruled with a loose-ball foul on Reese and the Sky forward converted both free throws. This took the score to 59-54 at the end of the third quarter. Chicago was able to put the clamps on the Sun in the final period after this incident. They only allowed Connecticut to score 12 points in the fourth quarter as they pulled away for the win.

WNBA fans praise Angel Reese for her first career triple-double

Angel Reese has been having a hard time in the public eye recently. She has been drawing haters like moths to a flame since her infamous moment during the 2023 National Championship final. There is certainly a racial element to the amount and nature of vitriol that Reese has been putting up with. But by shining on the court and not allowing controversy to take up space, the LSU legend has flipped the script.

This latest achievement adds another feather to her cap as she aims to prove herself worthy of superstardom. WNBA Twitter has had a generally appreciative and positive response to her triple-double against Connecticut. Given that she didn’t hunt for her shot and had 11 assists, fans noted the change in her attitude on offense as she played more of a facilitator’s role for the team missing Courtney Vandersloot.

The Chicago Sky would be hoping that the plaudits from this game inspire Reese to become a more team-oriented player. Her 11 assists showcase her potential as a playmaker alongside Kamilla Cardoso, who is a more advanced scorer, but needs to be set up in position to succeed.
