Chicago Sky selects Hailey Van Lith to reunite with former teammate Angel Reese

Angel Reese has yet to return to her Chicago Sky to start preparing for next season. But earlier today, she and her teammates were glued to the television screen to see who their front office select as their next teammates.

Reese ended her rookie campaign with a couple of WNBA records. But her team struggled towards the end and that meant, they would have to rethink how they move forward. Out went her head coach and some other players as the front office looked towards a different direction.

They traded for some star players but know that the veterans might not be around for long. The upcoming CBA means everyone other than Reese and fellow draftee Kamilla Cardoso are free agents next season.

This meant, the team would need to draft some players they can hope to build around for the future. They dipped into the trade market and landed a pick so that they would not hold the 10th, 11th, 16th and 22nd picks in this draft.

They selected Slovenian forward Ajša Sivka with the 10th pick. The WNBA rebounding phenom might just start to learn about her new teammate. But she will not need to learn anything about the next pick. Rather, she was excited that she will be teammates again with LSU Hailey Van Lith and tweeted this.

We ain’t do it right the first time. Let’s run it backkkkk

The Sky superstar played together with Van Lith for one season and were booted out of March Madness by Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes. The point guard had joined LSU to win a national championship. With this tweet, Angel Reese is excited that they get a second chance to fix things and win a title together.

Hailey Van Lith excited to play with Angel Reese again

As soon as commissioner Cathy Engelbert called out Hailey Van Lith’s name, she became emotional knowing how her hard work has helped restore her stature as a good basketball player. But reporters were more interested to know how she looks forward to playing alongside Angel Reese again.

Angel has maintained contact with me this whole past year since she has been in the league and I transferred. I really appreciate her. Mostly I’m just excited to get to be around her again. She’s a dog, she turns up the intensity of everyone around her.

Van Lith’s answer clarifies that she is looking forward to reuniting with her former teammate. Having a known person in the building will help her get acclimatized to her new surroundings. Building that chemistry is important as the Chicago Sky look towards building this core.

Sky building a new core along with elite veterans

The Chicago Sky’s starting lineup for next season will see veterans Courtney Vandersloot, Ariel Atkins and Rebecca Allen fill out the backcourt. Along with them Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso are expected to be the frontcourt.

This means, all the new draftees, Sivka, Van Lith, Maddy Westbeld and Aicha Coulibaly will be looking to play off the bench after they lock down a roster spot. If they do, expect the Sky to build off them going forward. Sivka, Van Lith and Westbeld are pieces that can eventually take over as starters.

This means, the team have five core young players to build on for the future. The Sky have thought long and hard to draft players that give them a lot of upside. Angel Reese’s desire to win a WNBA title alongside Hailey Van Lith could come true.
