Angel Reese nets $3 billion top-selling candy brand as official sponsor
Confectionary giant "Reese's" and Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese collaborate to launch special edition merchandise.
WNBA and Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese joins hands with Reese's
The WNBA has seen a tremendous growth in fan following this year. Owing to the influx of superstar rookies, Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark and Chicago Sky’s Angel Reese, attendance, viewership, merchandise sales, all have seen exponential growth. But it is not just limited to the league and teams who have benefitted. The rookies are also seeing brands line up to associate with them.
Angel Reese for instance, has just signed a sponsorship deal with Reese’s. The brand that sells their popular peanut butter cups has launched a special ‘Reese’s Pieces‘ collection of apparel. It went on sale on August 21st but is the first of a few such collaboration.
Reese’s and their parent company Hershey’s are doing everything to boost their sales from the current approximate $3 billion number. Collaborating with Reese helps them to tap the basketball market.
More than that, this is a significant deal for the Chicago Sky rookie as she becomes the face of one of the best-selling confectionaries in the country. Their obvious similar name also makes it a sensible deal. The actual numbers are not known but expect the rookie to make this a long-standing partnership if she continues to dominate the double-double charts.
This will not only be beneficial for Reese and Reese’s, but the WNBA too will get more exposure from the brand as it reaches non-sporting customers as well. Such deals will not only help women’s basketball as a whole, but also help other players land sponsorship deals, which, otherwise, have stayed away so far.
Angel Reese’s nicknames bring Barbie to WNBA
At LSU, Angel Reese was known by the nickname Bayou Barbie. Now with the Chicago Sky, she has a new name, Chi Barbie. The first name has changed as per city, but the latter part remains as she associated herself with the Barbie image. It seems Barbie’s owner, Mattel took note.
The toy conglomerate in partnership with Athlife Inc. will team up with the Chicago Sky and the WNBA. They will host the first ever Barbie Game Night on the 30th of August at the Wintrust Arena. Ironically, Caitlin Clark and her red-hot Indiana Fever will roll into town to resume their rivalry. So, to celebrate women in sports, Mattel and the Sky are arranging all sorts of Barbie themed events on gameday.
Such partnerships further help in expanding the WNBA’s exposure to girls across the world. After all, Barbie is the most popular doll in the world. This will also pave the way for other major brands to want to associate with them. Safe to say, tese rookies are changing the fortunes of women’s basketball.
