Angel Reese

Angel Reese built a following off her gesture to Caitlin Clark during the 2023 NCAA championship game. However, she also has a lot of quirks to her game that made her an intriguing prospect during college. In her WNBA career, Reese has had some individual successes based on the skills that she’s displayed. But her game has a lot of maturing to do, a lot of skill to gain, and a lot of progress to be made on offense.

Specifically, she has to start becoming a more efficient scorer, as well as a better decision maker. While it may be a meme to call her a ‘mebounder’ – a term for someone grabbing their own rebounds going viral on WNBA Twitter – she should be a lot more willing to kick out to open teammates than she currently is. Her failure to do this has often led to stagnating possessions for the Chicago Sky, leading to complaints from fans.

The 6’3″ forward shot a below-par field goal percentage of 39.1% during her rookie season. She was a league-worst 44.5% shooter from within 8 feet of the bucket last year. Despite a lot of talk about her working on her low release point during layups, Reese does not seem to have shown any improvement in that aspect. Her release continues to look way too low for a player supposed to have that as her bread and butter.

A video of one of her offseason workouts resurfaced recently. It shows the Chicago Sky forward practicing a dribble move into a layup from the low post region. However, the speed and physicality of the rep were clearly not in line with WNBA standards. It was something that looked extremely amateurish, even to casual fans. They weren’t shy in pointing this out in the comments while laying out her problems as a scorer.

It is clear that Reese’s training during the offseason did not have the focus that it needed to have. This has reflected in her output during the current season.

Angel Reese is having an awful shooting season in 2025

Angel Reese’s 2025 FG% of 31.1% ranks among the lowest ever for frontcourt players. Considering that most of her shots are within 5 feet of the basket, where she shot the worst in the WNBA for that range, this is an abysmal output for an All-Star second-year player. Her scoring inefficiency is further highlighted by games like a 0-8 shooting output against the Liberty. She scored only 2 points via free throws in this game.

Reese’s scoring has also declined. Her points per game (PPG) in 2025 has ranged between 7.0 to 10.0, a drop from her 2024 average of 13.6 PPG. Reese’s struggles are compounded by her shot selection and frequent blocks. Her tendency to take shots close to the basket is consistent with her role. But it hasn’t translated to efficiency, as defenders are capitalizing on her predictable attempts.

Her offensive inefficiency, particularly a 33.3% FG% in recent games (e.g., May 29 vs. Dallas), overshadows her defensive contributions when evaluating her shooting specifically.
