WNBA player Marina Mabrey takes sly dig at Angel Reese and Chicago Sky after being traded to Connecticut Sun mid-season.

Angel Reese’s ex-teammate takes sly shot at Chicago Sky ahead of anticipated matchup

Angel Reese and Chicago Sky will face former teammate Marina Mabrey and her new team

Angel Reese, in her first year in the WNBA, is in the playoff hunt along with her Chicago Sky teammates. Before the All-Star break, they had a decent run of games. They established themselves as a hard-nosed team willing to give championship contenders a shock or two. However, they traded away their top scorer, Marina Mabrey, to the Connecticut Sun.

In her next game, Mabrey will go up against her former team. Mabrey was approached by Yahoo Sports’ Eden Laase to talk about her mid-season transition. When asked specifically about her motivation to join the Sun, she used it as an opportunity to mock her former team subtly.

Being a part of a team like this that is so disciplined with a championship mindset, I haven’t been a part of that yet.

The comment is a sly dig at Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky. With them still building their culture, they are nowhere near championship contention. The Sky traded for Marina Mabrey before the 2023 season to make her the franchise cornerstone. She was that as she led the team in scoring up until her exit.

However, she was in a completely new system. The coach who traded for her was gone. Then, the new regime decided to draft Reese and Kamilla Cardoso to spearhead their future. Marina Mabrey waited to see how it would turn out.

Once she understood that her goal to win a WNBA championship would take some time, she asked for a trade. She did not mind joining her scorned rival, DiJonai Carrington. After all this, Reese and the Sky would want to prove a point.

Angel Reese and Sky will have pride at stake

The Chicago Sky is led by Teresa Weatherspoon. Both she and her team have always been looked at as second options. They will most probably remember this comment from their former player. After all, they pride themselves on exceeding pre-season predictions.

The game between the Connecticut Sun and Chicago Sky on Friday the 24th will be interesting. The Sky, led by Angel Reese, might want to show Mabrey that she was wrong about them. They are still figuring out their new rotations, as the 1-2 record since Mabrey moved out shows. So even if they lose this game, the season’s final game remains the perfect time for payback.

After all, Reese and her teammates will want to fight for their pride. They would want to show that they are also building up to be a championship team. It’s just that they are maybe a couple of seasons away to achieve the biggest prize.
