Heartbreak at the Olympics is quite common. Athletes go through intense training for nearly four years and compete against the best athletes in the world. Facing losses after this hard work can be soul-crushing, but things may seem even worse when something happens out of one’s control. Something similar happened with Angela Carini after her match against Imane Khelif.
Angela Carini recently gave a post-match interview where she had years in her eyes. She showed a video of a man on her phone, who was revealed to be her father. She broke down before continuing her statement. The 25-year-old revealed that she was extremely tired during the last part of her training before the Tokyo Olympics, which she called “The Last Kilometre.”
She told her father that she was highly fatigued. However, she won’t give up. In response, her father had told her a powerful anecdote. He mentioned that being a champion was like cycling. When a champion sees the last kilometer on his track, they don’t give up. Rather, they pedal even faster. She continued to pedal and fight even when she had blood in her eyes. She mentioned that she wanted the victory at all costs for her father.
The Paris Olympics have been full of controversy since before they even began. From banning Belarus and Russia to allowing a convicted child molester to participate in the games, these decisions have received mixed reactions and have been questioned by the public.
Angela Carini forfeits in 46 seconds against Imane Khelif and breaks down
Angela Carini recently fought Algerian Imane Khelif, a biological male. She forfeited the match in 46 seconds and cried when her opponent was declared the winner. She claimed that the fight was unjust and threw her headgear onto the mat.

Later, in an interview, she mentioned that she was used to suffering. However, she had never taken a punch like that and felt it was impossible to continue. She didn’t elaborate more on the matter as she claimed to be nobody to declare it illegal. She got into the ring to fight but couldn’t go anymore after the first pet due to intense pain in her nose.
I got into the ring. But I didn't feel like it anymore to fight after the first minute. I started to feel a strong pain in my nose. I didn't give up, but a punhc hurt too much so I said enough. I'm leaving with my head held high.Angela Carini during post-match interview
Imane Khelif was born a biological woman and failed gender eligibility tests at the 2023 World Championships. Thus, the Algerian was put into the women’s boxing category at the Paris Olympics. Her coach also commented, saying that she may have broken her nose.
