Anthony Rendon‘s time with the Los Angeles Angels has finally come to an end. On Tuesday, reports emerged that the team had agreed to restructure the $245 million contract of the third baseman and end his tenure with them.

After playing a crucial part in the Washington Nationals’ World Series triumph, Rendon would pen down a 7-year, $245 million contract with the Angels. As per reports from MLB.com, he owed $38 million in the 2026 season.

Last month, there had been reports suggesting that the Angels were exploring ways to free up money from his contract. One of them also included him retiring from baseball.

While Rendon is not going to retire, he will not be playing for the Angels in 2026. The team has agreed to defer his $38 million salary for the 2026 season. It will be deferred for up to 3 to 5 years. He, however, will remain on the active roster and will likely be placed on the 60-day injured list, which will open up a spot for someone on the 40-man roster.

The American international’s tenure with the Angels has been nothing short of a major disappointment. In the COVID-19-shortened season in 2020, he smashed 9 home runs and 31 RBIs in 52 games while having a .286/.418/.497 slash line.

After that, he suffered a massive dip in form and was plagued by injuries. From 2021 to the 2024 season, he never appeared in more than 58 games. The 35-year-old missed the entirety of the 2025 campaign after undergoing hip surgery.

Over the past six seasons, Rendon played in 257 games and had a .242/.348/.369 slash line while hitting 22 home runs and 125 RBIs. During the 2019 season with the Nationals, he hit 34 home runs and 126 RBIs in 146 games.

After the reports about Rendon came out, another report regarding the Angels surfaced. The American League West have agreed to terms with relief pitcher Kirby Yates.

Yates, who spent the 2025 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, agreed to a 1-year, $5 million deal with the Angels and will join their bullpen.

Before his signing, the team brought in pitchers Alek Manoah and Grayson Rodriguez. They also added utility man Vaughn Grissom. With the team set to save money from Rendon’s contract, they can use the funds to explore additional options and strengthen their squad for the upcoming season.
