Former Indian long jump athlete Anju Bobby George won the lifetime achievement award at the BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year 2021. She became the second person to clinch this recognition as PT Usha did so in the inaugural edition.

While thanking everyone for presenting her with this award, George also wished luck to the upcoming athletes across the globe. 

“I have been blessed with a fulfilling journey. The adversities I faced and overcame taught me that there is no substitute for hard work and perseverance. Anything is possible with the right motivation and willingness,” said Anju Bobby George.

“I would like to tell every athlete across the globe that battling setbacks will only make you stronger. Never lose sight and always try to be a better version of yourself with every passing day,” she added.

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) also congratulated the veteran athlete for winning this prestigious award.

Koneru Humpy won BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year 2021

World Women Rapid Champion Koneru Humpy

Women’s rapid world chess champion Grandmaster Koneru Humpy won the BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year 2021 award. She edged past the other nominees – Manu Bhaker, sprinter Dutee Chand, hockey player Rani Rampal and wrestler Vinesh Phogat. Ace Indian shuttler PV Sindhu won this title in 2020.

The British Broadcasting Company added a new category this year for the ‘emerging player’. The 19-year old Indian shooter Manu Bhaker won this award.
