The Houston Astros were once again caught up in a heated moment this weekend. During the game against the Boston Red Sox on Saturday, the American League West team accused their opponents of stealing signs which led to an MLB announcer throwing shade at them.
After the 7th inning on Saturday at Fenway Park in Boston, things got heated between Astros relief pitcher Hector Neris and the Red Sox’s third base coach Kyle Hudson. Neris believed that Trevor Story was tipping off his pitches to his teammates from second base.
Story was then intentionally balked by Neris to third base. Meanwhile, Carlos Narvaez, who was facing Neris on a 3-2 count following a time violation, would ground out to short with two outs and end the innings.
As he walked off the mound, Neris exchanged some words with Hudson. This would lead to the benches being cleared with players from both teams rushing out of their dugouts and onto the field.
While there was no shoving or any serious fight, Red Sox announcer Will Middlebrooks threw a brutal shade at the Astros for accusing their opponents of stealing signs. The broadcaster referenced the major sign-stealing scandal of the Astros during 2017.
Imagine the Astros being mad about stealing signs, but guess what? That’s part of the game when you can see the grip in a glove.

The Astros, ironically, were found to be stealing signs during the 2017 and 2018 seasons. They would illegally use a video camera to learn about the upcoming pitches and relay them with a message to their batters.
While no players were banned for this, the MLB would impose a $5 million fine on the team and strip them of first and second round draft picks in 2020 and 2021. General Manager Jeff Luhnow and manager A.J. Hinch were also suspended. The MLB investigation also determined that current Red Sox manager Alex Cora, who was the bench coach of the Astros at that time, was the mastermind behind this.
Astros sign stealing scandal was recently brought up by another MLB announcer
Ever since their sign-stealing scandal broke out, the Houston Astros have been questioned time and again about cheating whenever they perform well with the bat. Recently, their infamous scandal was brought up by another MLB announcer.

Around a month ago, the Astros traveled to Southern California to face the Los Angeles Dodgers. In the first game of the series, the 2-time World Series champions would blow away the reigning champions 18-1.
After Jake Myers, Jose Altuve, and Cam Smith picked up hits against Ben Casparius, announcer Orel Hershiser would bring up the sign-stealing scandal of the Astros. During the broadcast, Hershiser expressed that he did not want to open old wounds, but it seemed like the players knew which pitch was coming.
I don’t want to open an old wound. But in some ways, they’re swinging at these breaking balls like they know what is coming.
Orel Hershiser said
The Astros faced off against the Dodgers in the 2017 World Series and eventually came out on top in Game 7 to clinch their first-ever championship. As for this recent series between them, the Houston-based side proceeded to win 6-4 and 5-1 following their massive win and completed a 3-game series sweep of the Dodgers.
Astros get swept by Red Sox in Carlos Correa’s grand return
Following their 6-1 loss on Sunday, the Houston Astros lost their third successive game and got swept by the Boston Red Sox in the process. This was not the outcome the team was hoping for following the grand return of Carlos Correa.

Before this series, the Astros were reunited with Correa as the team reached an agreement with the Minnesota Twins over a trade deal for him. This series marked the first time Correa donned the Astros jersey since leaving them in 2021.
On Sunday, he hit his first home run back as an Astros star to open the scoring and give his team a 1-0 lead. However, the Red Sox answered immediately back in the bottom of the 4th inning and scored 6 runs, which saw them walk away as 6-1 winners.

Despite the series sweep, the Astros still hold a 2.5-game division lead over the Seattle Mariners. The Red Sox are now 3 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays for the first spot in the American League East Standings with this series sweep. They are, however, 1.5 games ahead of the New York Yankees following their 3-game series loss against the Miami Marlins.
