Anthony Davis could force a trade out of Lakers if JJ Redick does not work out, claims former NBA Champion

Former NBA champion believes Anthony Davis could force a trade out of Los Angeles Lakers if JJ Redick does not work out

With the ink about to dry on the contract JJ Redick is signing with the Los Angeles Lakers, fans of the franchise are excited to see what the future holds. Redick will be tasked to oversee the shift from the LeBron James era to the Anthony Davis-led era. However, what if Redick does not pan out? Former champion Kendrick Perkins suggests Davis could then be forced to take matters into his own hands.

The former center was on ESPN’s Get Up today to talk about Redick’s hiring. During his analogy, he made an interesting take on Anthony Davis‘ future.

I wanna see how it goes with Anthony Davis because. If JJ Redick is not thriving and Anthony Davis is not playing at an elite level and he's not happy, I wouldn't be surprised if he wants out of LA to be honest with you. I'm gonna give it till All-Star break.

Perkins made the point considering Davis is in the prime of his career. Having won a championship, he will be hungry to win at least another before retiring.

Therefore, it will not be unlikely for Davis to try and maximize his situation. JJ Redick has been hired to take the team into the next era, where the superstar center will be the leader. Therefore, if Redick cannot bring out the best from the team to compliment Davis’ skills, a championship will be an afterthought.

The Chicago native could then look to team up with another contender to help win an NBA title. Therefore, the All-Star break will be a good reference point to see how the team progresses.

Anthony Davis to lead Los Angeles Lakers into new era

LeBron James might at the most play for another year or two. When he does hang up his shoes, the 39-year-old superstar will pass on the baton to Davis. After all, Davis is a bonafide superstar. Possessing a unique combination of offensive skills and the ability to be an elite defender.

Those skills should be the base with which the Los Angeles Lakers build their future. Davis will need a combination of elite shooters, playmakers, and perimeter defenders around him. If one or two of them happen to be superstars, all the better. Davis will get much-needed help to distribute that offensive load.

If JJ Redick can develop some of the current youngsters into superstars, the franchise will not have to mortgage their future to win. That will ensure that the big man can have a steady path to winning a championship or two before he retires.
