Anthony Davis makes his intentions clear for the season after showing 4-time DPOY Rudy Gobert his place in Lakers’ season-opener
Anthony Davis set the tone for the season with a dominant performance in the Lakers' victory over Rudy Gobert and the Timberwolves.
Anthony Davis dominates Rudy Gobert and Wolves
Anthony Davis came out all guns blazing in the Los Angeles Lakers’ season opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Davis dominated the hardwood, with his eyes set on asserting himself against the Wolves All-Star center Rudy Gobert.
Following the Lakers’ 110-103 victory over the Wolves, Anthony Davis revealed his goal as he enters his 13th season in the NBA. He ended the matchup against Gobert and the Wolves with 36 points, 16 boards, and three blocks.
After the game, Davis joined the Lakers’ post-game broadcast for an interview. When asked about his spectacular defense in the game, which saw him close down the paint against the Wolves, Davis didn’t hesitate for a second before answering.

Davis has repeatedly been one of the best defenders in the NBA over the last decade. The Brow has made five All-Defensive teams while finishing in the Top 3 for DPOY voting multiple times. But his answer in the interview was aimed at none other than Rudy Gobert.
The Wolves Big Man is the reigning DPOY and is tied for first all-time in total DPOYs with four Hakeem Olajuwon Trophies to his name. Davis has been vocal about his disdain for the overwhelming defensive recognition of the 32-year-old Frenchman over the years.
At the end of last season, Davis was disappointed by his absence from the list of DPOY finalists. In an interview with ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, he had put the media on blast for excluding the 9x All-Star/ from the list of DPOY finalists.
Coming into this season, Davis has made his intentions clear – he wants to win the DPOY and the NBA Championship.
Anthony Davis’ heroics spoil Rudy Gobert’s big contract night
Rudy Gobert ended his night on the wrong side of several highlight plays from Anthony Davis. The Lakers center dominated Gobert in the paint, stuffing multiple attempts at the rim by the Stiffle Tower.
With the trash talk and the loss, Gobert may have missed out on his opportunity to celebrate his big night after announcing a three-year $110 Million contract extension with the Wolves. The Frenchman will now be signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves until the 2027-28 NBA Season.
After securing his third major contract extension, Gobert would have had all the reasons to celebrate his big moment with a dominant performance against the Lakers. However, The Brow stole the show, overshadowing Gobert’s play with his dominance.
With the game already going down in history for LeBron James‘ big moment, Davis made sure to leave his own mark on the game. He will now wait for Saturday night when the Phoenix Suns come to town to take on the Lakers in LA.
