Anthony Davis signs $190Million maximum contract extension with LA Lakers

After delivering his promise by winning the Los Angeles Lakers their 17th championship, the franchise awards star forward Anthony Davis with a 5-year contract extension of $190 Million maximum. Davis had become an unrestricted free agent by declining a $28.7 Million player option on November 15. Many suggested the player might look elsewhere to start off his 2020-21 campaign. But after Lebron James signed a 2-year $85 Million extension with the Lakers. It seems like Davis has also given a green flag to play alongside him for yet another season. 

Anthony Davis was very crucial for the Lakers, especially in the playoffs after a very impressive regular season. With AD and King James pairing up against one team after another, it seemed impossible to stop the Lakers at one time. However, after a certain of time, they achieved the inevitable by clinching the 17th ring for the franchise. 

Anthony Davis’ massive contract extension 

Wojnarowski reports the deal includes an early termination option prior to the fifth year of the contract in 2024-25. Davis reportedly considered a variety of short- and long-term contracts before accepting the maximum offer, which he could sign as early as Thursday. 

After spending his first seven NBA seasons with the Pelicans, the Lakers traded for Davis in July 2019. Paired with LeBron James, he composes one half of the league’s best duo. Since joining the Lakers, Davis played a critical role in the team’s 2020 NBA championship title. He averaged 25 points and 10.7 rebounds during Los Angeles’ 4–2 victory over the Heat in the Finals. 

Having said that, it would be interesting to see how the Lakers would start their regular season after strengthening their roster and improving their balance all around the court.
