Anthony Davis was supposed to be the superstar who would bring much-needed defensive grit along with his offensive prowess to the Dallas Mavericks.

That expectation has not yet materialized as the forward has not been able to play even half of the games he has been eligible for. Injuries became a regular affair from right after he arrived on trade, and it continues to mar his career.

At this juncture, he is hoping to sign another max extension, be it with the Mavs or with whichever team he goes to before the trade deadline. That possibility of a trade, however, took a hit after he injured his left hand in their game against the Utah Jazz.

Earlier, Shams Charania, ESPN’s top NBA Insider, revealed on his X page that Anthony Davis will likely require surgery to repair the damaged ligaments in his injured left hand. That meant he would miss the rest of the season, as recovery takes months. As soon as this post went live, the 6′ 10″ Kentucky alum wrote a separate tweet on his page.

Y’all better stop listening to all these lies on these apps!

This was the Chicago native’s retort at those surgery rumors. His words indicated that the news was wrong and that Charania had gotten it all wrong. Soon, the Insider was forced to change the news.

Shams Charania corrects Anthony Davis surgery news

As soon as Anthony Davis’ tweet went live, it drew enough attention to question whether Shams Charania had received his news from the right sources. It was not the first time he had proved to have gotten things wrong. This time, he quickly tried to correct himself.

Update: Dallas’ Anthony Davis will not require surgery on his injured hand after a second opinion with specialist Dr. Steven Shin in Los Angeles on Tuesday and will be re-evaluated in six weeks, league sources tell ESPN.

This was an update tweet on his original post, and not a separate tweet, essentially working as a correction post rather than a standalone one.

Davis’ post may have thrown his credentials into question, even though Charania is the league’s most renowned Insider after Adrian Wojnarowski left his position. This update tweet revealed that the Mavericks star had sought a second opinion, which advised him to avoid the surgery, as it was not required.

This means that Shams Charania may have revealed the correct news first, but was not aware of the second opinion until Anthony Davis’ tweet surfaced.

Anthony Davis’ trade market is open

By avoiding surgery, Anthony Davis will be able to return to play sometime later this season. Such injuries take at least a month to recover, but it should not deter other teams from trying to trade for him.

As reported earlier, the Mavericks have had renewed trade talks around Davis with multiple interested teams, and those conversations are continuing as Dallas stands 15-25, 12th in the Western Conference, and prioritizing the big-picture outlook around Cooper Flagg.

This was Shams Charania’s update on Davis’ trade market, which was initially feared to be shut down due to the prospective surgery. Now, those interested can work with the Dallas Mavericks to find the best deal.

It has been rumored that quite a few Eastern Conference teams are interested in the NBA champion, as his two-way expertise is hard to come by. Maybe one of the contenders can lure the Mavericks with a good enough offer to allow Davis to move out of American Airlines Center before the February 5th trade deadline.
