24-year-old Anthony Edwards is widely regarded for his athleticism, which he uses along with his 6′ 4″ height to throw down dunks over any player he wishes.
Some players have felt the brunt of his dunks, such as former Utah Jazz star John Collins, who fans now know as being the victim of a vicious dunk from the Minnesota Timberwolves star. The Georgia alum has made it a habit of using his elevation when needed.
Last season, he focused more on his outside shot. That saw his drives to the rim reduce. But that does not mean he has lost a step. In fact, the Paris Olympics gold medalist has learned to conserve his energy as it is important to stay fresh in the postseason.
He did look fresh in the playoffs, but could not take the next step as a superstar to help his Timberwolves defeat the eventual champion Oklahoma City Thunder. Edwards has promised to work hard in the offseason to make up for it.
There are still a couple of months before the next season starts, which means he has enough time to schedule one last trip to build his brand. As has been the trend of late, he took a trip to China and ended up meeting the great Yao Ming.
I wud dunk on Yao shout out to one of da greats.

Anthony Edwards’ caption indicates he does not doubt that he can clear Yao Ming’s 7′ 6″ frame and dunk on him. The Atlanta native is known for his confidence and swagger. Maybe that’s why he thinks he can clear the Hall of Fame center on a dunk.
Fans school Anthony Edwards after dunking on Yao Ming comments
When this quote came to the attention of basketball fans, they were left shaking their heads. Everyone knows Anthony Edwards has elite athleticism, and there is enough proof of his elite vertical.
However, dunking over the 7′ 6″ Yao Ming is no easy task. They believe the Minnesota Timberwolves’ star’s confidence was a bit over the top. He has yet to dunk over 7′ 3″ Victor Wembanyama.
Therefore, the Chinese basketball legend is still a way away. There are very few NBA players who have the elevation to dunk over someone that tall. Fans are not sure Ant-Man is there yet. Check out examples of those reactions below:
He a real ant 🐜 compared to Yao’s size.

He didn't even dunk Wemby yet. @JaMorant the only one that can say something like this.

Anthony Edwards might have claimed that as a joke. He might also know that it is difficult to dunk over someone that tall. Many have dunked over Shaquille O’Neal, but he is 5 inches shorter and has had to duck his head to avoid getting hit.
Therefore, those lofty claims are unproven. Until the Wolves star proves he can dunk over Wembanyama, it is unlikely that fans will accept such claims.
Anthony Edwards needs to revert to his athleticism next season
This past 2024-25 season, Anthony Edwards was taking many more three-point shots and did not attack the rim as much as he used to. Hall of Famer Charles Barkley felt the young star had regressed.

Even if he scoffed at those suggestions, the Minnesota Timberwolves’ lackluster performance in the Western Conference Finals somewhat proved that point.
Edwards’ game became one-dimensional at one point, and the Oklahoma City Thunder exploited it. If he wants to take the next step in his development, the 1st overall pick of the 2020 NBA Draft has to bring back his athleticism.
If he can develop a mid-range shot, along with his 3-point scoring, the shooting guard has the potential to become one of, if not the best, young players in the league.
Only if he develops to that stage can he help his team take the next step in their quest to win their 1st-ever NBA championship. There are a lot of expectations on young Anthony Edwards’ shoulders.
