Both Anthony Edwards and Victor Wembanyama put on a show on Saturday night. The Minnesota Timberwolves almost pulled off a monumental comeback in the second half but came up short as they suffered a 126-123 defeat to the San Antonio Spurs at the Frost Bank Center. Their two superstars showed up in what was arguably one of the best games of the 2025-26 campaign.
Victor Wembanyama ended the night with 39 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks as the Spurs improved their record to 29-13. They now remain at second in the highly competitive Western Conference standings. Anthony Edwards was certainly disappointed to end up on the losing side as he scored a career-high 55 points but saw his team drop to 27-16 while sitting fourth in the standings.
Edwards has shown that he is a student of the game after taking tips from the great Michael Jordan on how to improve his game offensively. Moreover, it has been visible this season as the Wolves guard is currently averaging a career-high 29.6 points to go along with 4.9 rebounds and 3.7 assists.
Meanwhile, Wembanyama was in the MVP conversation till an injury ruled him out for a few weeks. But his recent form has seen him climb up the rankings once again. If the Spurs can secure the top seed, Wemby can become a favorite for the MVP trophy.
It was their third clash of the season with the Wolves coming out on top in their previous two meetings. Their previous matchup saw the Wolves beating the Spurs 104-103, hence, there was a lot on the line for the team from San Antonio on Saturday.
In the final minutes of the game, the two superstars traded buckets and showed everyone why they deserved to be at the very top as they took matters into their own hands. After the game, Edwards said he loved the matchup with Wembanyama in his locker-room interview. When asked about the buckets being traded by the two, Edwards said he enjoyed the competition.
They got Wemby. He’s supposed to be the ‘Face of the League’, I always got to get up for that one. I love it. I wish we could’ve just move everybody out of the way…me vs. him.
Anthony Edwards said after the game

The Edwards vs Wembanyama matchup has proven to be very promising based on their last two games and fans are optimistic that this is the rivalry to look out for in the years to come.
Are Victor Wembanyama and Anthony Edwards the future faces of the NBA?
With LeBron James and Stephen Curry at the backend of their careers, the NBA has looked at the next generation of players to fill in the role of the “Face of the NBA”. Wembanyama is very much in the conversation for the best player in the league and remains touted to be a level above everyone else once he plays to his full potential.

But the NBA have been on the lookout for an American player to be the face as well. As such, Edwards has shown why he deserves to be in the conversation for the best player in the league at the moment. He is a player who never backs away from a challenge and has even gone to say that he he hopes to dunk on the Frenchman, who is one of the best shot blockers in the league.
The Spurs center has been on a minutes restriction since his comeback from injury, but has continued to play at an elite level. Wemby is currently one of the top five contenders for league MVP award this season. Nevertheless, the two superstars have shown that they are ready to take over the league and create a special rivalry for years to come.
