Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon urged his teammates to interestingly ‘stay humble’ after the club’s 2-0 semi-final victory over Arsenal in the EFL Cup. His comments were aimed at the Gunners’, who have often been associated with the two words.
Anthony Gordon played a key role in the Magpies 2-0 win over the Gunners. The club triumphed 4-0 on aggregate to make it to the Carabao Cup final. The Newcastle number 10 helped double his side’s lead in the 52nd minute of the second-leg encounter. It was courtesy of a blunder made by Arsenal keeper David Raya. Gordon had also scored a goal in the first-leg of the crucial semi-final encounter.
Speaking to reporters after the match, the 23-year-old winger called upon his teammates to stay humble and not get carried away, after their morale-boosting victory. He added that the semi-final win over Arsenal might help them bring their season campaign back on track. Gordon also necessitated the importance of bringing the team together, ahead of the final.
I think it’s important for us to stay humble now. We went on a really good run and we had two results that we didn’t see coming… so this was a good game to put us back on track.

The Newcastle forward’s ‘humble’ comments could be seen as a sly dig aimed at Arsenal’s battles with Manchester City this season. Earlier this season, Man City forward Erling Haaland had urged Gunners’ boss Mikel Arteta to ‘stay humble’, following a 2-2 draw between the two sides. The exchange between the two quickly went viral on social media, ahead of Man City’s poor slump.

Not just Gordon, but Newcastle star Kieran Tripper also referenced the ‘humble’ word, while celebrating the Magpies’ victory. Nonetheless, Newcastle will be hoping for similar success in the fourth round of the FA Cup, when they take on Birmingham City.

Mikel Arteta pointed to Arsenal’s failure to score a goal in the first-leg. He atempted to blame the Carabao Cup match-ball, interestingly claiming that it ‘flies’ a lot. Following their second-leg victory, the Magpies’ social media accounts posted pictures of the yellow Mitre match-ball. Taking a dig at Arteta’s previous comments, the picture carried a hilarious caption which stated that it was the ‘culprit’.

The social media banter did leave fans amused. Meanwhile, the match will definitely leave Mikel Arteta fuming. The Gunners have been disappointingly knocked out of both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup this season.
