‘Anthony Joshua has told me that Martin will be a world champion’ – Martin Bakole’s trainer Billy Nelson reveals

Congolese professional boxer Martin Bakole will be a world champion according to Anthony Joshua and Peter Fury, his trainer Billy Nelson revealed. The younger brother of Ilunga Makabu is making quite a name for himself as a hot prospect.

The 15-1, Heavyweight has just been stopped once in his career, against Michael Hunter back in 2018 and has gone from strength to strength ever since, defeating all of his next four opponents via TKO. He takes on Sergey Kuzmin for the vacant WBC International Heavyweight Title, on a night when Anthony Joshua takes on Kubrat Pulev.

Speaking ahead of his fight, his trainer Billy Nelson revealed how a lot of boxing big names viz. Anthony Joshua, Peter Fury had words of praise for Martin, also expecting him to go the long way (becoming the world champion).

Speaking to Sky Sports, Billy Nelson was quoted as saying, AJ has told me that Martin will be a world champion. So has [Joshua’s trainer] Rob McCracken and so has [Hughie Fury’s trainer] Peter Fury. Martin has looked brilliant in sparring. Martin is a very clever fighter who makes you think. McCracken thinks along the same lines as myself when it comes to sparring – as long as your brain is active, you don’t need to be throwing bombs. If two smart operators are sharing the ring they have to be on the ball all the time. That’s the case with Anthony and Martin. You can hear their brains ticking when they spar.” [via Skysports]
