Anthony Richardson’s third year with the Indianapolis Colts got off to the worst possible start. Richardson hurt his finger while facing the Baltimore Ravens in the preseason.
On Thursday (August 7), the Ravens welcomed the Colts to Baltimore for the first preseason game of the year. Richardson looked sharp on the first couple of throws before tragedy struck.
Facing a 2nd-and-10, Richardson was sacked by the Ravens’ outside linebacker David Ojabo. The Colts’ offensive line did not mark Ojabo, who landed a free hit on Richardson.

The force of Ojabo’s tackle forced Richardson to fall on his side. During the impact, the 23-year-old injured a finger on his throwing hand. He was taken away and did not take part in the remainder of the game.

Daniel Jones replaced Anthony Richardson
Shane Steichen intended to play all his quarterbacks during the preseason, but did not anticipate switching players after a few snaps of football. After Richardson went off with an injury, Steichen sent Daniel Jones on for his Colts debut.

DJ spent a decent amount of time on the pitch but only completed 10 passes from 21 attempts (under 50% completion rate, including a couple of drops) for 144 yards.

After Jones, it was time for rookie Riley Leonard to make his professional debut. The sixth-round draft pick out of Notre Dame completed 12 of 24 attempts for 92 yards. He threw one interception and set up running back Khalil Herbert for a touchdown on the ground.

Their efforts went in vain as the Colts’ defense conceded an 87-yard punt return touchdown from rookie WR LaJohnaty Wester, and Rasheen Ali scored a walk-in touchdown. The Colts never recovered, and the Ravens won the fixture with a 16-24 scoreline.

Former NFL quarterback blames Anthony Richardson for his injury
While the majority blamed the O-line for leaving Richardson wide open for Ojabo’s hit, former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel viewed the incident differently. Daniel, who took a few hits like that during his playing days, blamed AR’s positional awareness.
This is completely on Anthony Richardson. First of all, throw into the hot… This is day one install. I know there’s a left defensive end driving up top, throw [to] the back [because you know] you are gonna get hit. This is what happens when you are looking at the wrong side. This is not on the running back, not on the offensive line. The right tackle, in fact, is doing exactly what he’s taught to do. If AR wanted to fix it, he should have slid the line to the right.

Let me explain why this is 100% on Anthony Richardson & not on the Line or RB. https://t.co/LwYA8dbB9f pic.twitter.com/M6u9RXKotF

Richardson missed the minicamp due to a shoulder injury but rejoined the team at the start of the training camp. He split first-team reps with Jones as Steichen prepared for the preseason.
Jones signed a one-year $14 million deal in the offseason after spending the backend of the last campaign in Minnesota. He began the season as the Giants’ starting quarterback but mutually parted ways after 10 games (played a total of 70 games for the New York club).
As for Anthony Richardson, he played 11 games in an injury-hit 2024 season. Richardson won 6 games, completing just 47.7% of his passes for 1814 yards, 14 overall touchdowns, and 12 picks.
Richardson will most likely miss the rest of the preseason due to his finger injury, leaving Jones and Leonard to share the quarterback duties. The Colts’ next game is against the Green Bay Packers at Lucas Oil Stadium.
