Anthony Volpe was once again criticized for his poor play. On Tuesday, the fans at Yankee Stadium would make their voices heard and rain down huge boos on their shortstop following a failed bunt attempt in their massive 12-2 loss against the Detroit Tigers.
Volpe has struggled with form both offensively and defensively this year. The 24-year-old has made several errors in the field, which has led to many blasting him and urging manager Aaron Boone to drop him from the team. Despite the backlash, Boone has defended his player and backed him.
The infielder’s struggle at the batting plate continued on Tuesday. The Yankees, who came into this game on the back of series wins against the Houston Astros and the Toronto Blue Jays, found themselves tied at 2-2 in the fifth inning.
Volpe, who was 0-1 in the game at that point, faced off against Casey Mize. With two runners on base and nobody out, the Yankees’ star would surprisingly try to bunt the ball. He ended up fouling out to the Tigers’ 3rd baseman, Colt Keith.
As he made his way back to the dugout, the fans would lose their cool. They would boo their shortstop as he headed towards the bench. Check out a video regarding that video:

To make matters worse for him, he ended up misjudging a catch later on in the game. With the Tigers leading 4-2 in the 7th inning, Trey Sweeney would hit a fly ball into shallow center field.
Volpe, who tracked back to make the play, was unable to complete the catch, and the ball landed in no man’s land. The Tigers would score and take a 5-2 lead.

The 2023 MLB Gold Glove winner ended the night going 0-for-3. In his last 7 games, he has a slashline of .125/.160/.167 while going 3-for-24 with 12 strikeouts. The Yankees ended up dropping the game 12-2 and lost the first game of this 3-game showdown with the AL Central leaders.
Aaron Boone continues to back Anthony Volpe amid criticism
Anthony Volpe is not having a good time on the baseball field at the moment. The New York Yankees shortstop continues to catch flak from the fans for his performances. Despite this, Aaron Boone has continued to back him.

Before the game against the Tigers on Tuesday, the Yankees’ skipper was asked whether he considered playing Jose Caballero at the shortstop position following the struggles of Volpe. In his response, Boone claimed that he was backing the October form of Volpe and thus sticking with him.
It is something I considered, but also believe and hope that his (Anthony Volpe) best days are here for us down the stretch and hopefully on into October. We saw that last year from him, how good he was for us in October, so we know he’s capable.
Aaron Boone said regarding Anthony Volpe
Aaron Boone was asked if he considered starting Jose Caballero at shortstop tonight and what he's made of Anthony Volpe's at-bats recently:

In the postseason last year, Anthony Volpe was one of the top performers for the Yankees. In the 14 games, he batted with a .286 average and had 14 hits, 6 RBIs, and 1 home run. That home run was a grand slam, which led the Yankees to an 11-4 victory in Game 4 and saw his team avoid getting swept in the Fall Classic.
With them losing 12-2 and the Toronto Blue Jays picking up a walk-off 4-3 win over the Houston Astros, the gap between the two teams is back to 3 games. Following this series, the Yankees will take on the Boston Red Sox, who are level with them in the AL East Standings.
