Anthony Volpe is once again at the end of receiving heavy criticism from the New York Yankees fans. The shortstop made a critical error once again on the field which led to the team losing against the Toronto Blue Jays for a 5th game in a row.

The 24-year-old has struggled with his defensive game this year. He was the talking point for the Yankees a few days back as he had his first multi-homer game in his team’s 12-9 win against the Atlanta Braves.

His defensive abilities are something that is causing fans to lose their minds. The 2023 Gold Glove winner made another throwing error in the fifth inning on Monday night.

The Yankees were leading the game 1-0 while entering the 5th inning. The Blue Jays would manage to turn the game around and lead 2-1. With a runner on base and two outs, the Yankees collapsed defensively once again.

First, Oswaldo Peraza made a throwing error. The third baseman’s throw would go past Paul Goldschmidt at 1st base, allowing the Blue Jays to make it a 3-1 ballgame.

Volpe would then have a similar error. A bad throw from him would lead to Goldschmidt fumbling the ball and allowing Myles Straw to score from 2nd base to extend the team’s lead to 4-1. As for Volpe, this was the 12th error he made this year, the most by a player in the American League.

The Blue Jays would hold on to the lead and win 4-1. Earlier this month, the team had swept the Yankees in a historic 4-game series and took over possession of first place in the American League East.

With their 5th successive win against the Yankees, the Blue Jays now have a 4-game lead at the top of the standings. This 4-game deficit is the largest gap the Bronx Bombers have had for the top spot since 2023.

Fans on social media were left fuming with the defensive performance from the Yankees in this game. Many fans would slam Volpe for his mistakes and vent their frustration against him. One user wrote, “Biggest bust in Yankees history” while taking a swipe at the shortstop.

This is not the first time that Volpe has been under fire from the fans this season. In the game against the Los Angeles Angels last month, he would make an error with the game tied, bases loaded and one out.

In what could have been a routine double play, it led to a huge run for the Angels, which turned out to be the main difference later on. That loss turned out to be the Yankees’ 6th successive loss, leading to many urging the team to bench him.

The Yankees manager backed Volpe and expressed that he is still a top shortstop despite the amount of errors he has made this season.

Yeah, I mean, we’re talking about a few extra errors. That’s the separator of when he wins a gold glove and when he’s not. He’s still a top shortstop… He just hasn’t been as consistent as he has in his first two years.

Aaron Boone told the reporters

Volpe would win the Gold Glove for the shortstop position in his debut season with the Yankees in 2023. In his first year, he made just 17 errors through 157 games and had 357 assists and 63 double plays. This year, he has already made 12 errors in 99 games while having 207 assists and 44 double plays.
