Scotland were at the mercy of hosts Germany in the opening match of the 2024 Euros. Julian Nagelsmann and co. were at their very best on Friday night as they dismantled their opponents by five goals to one at Allianz Arena. From penalties to set-piece routines and powerful long-range strikes, the game had it all. However, Antonio Rudiger played a significant part in ‘scoring’ Scotland’s only goal of the game.
Rudiger was rock solid against Scotland in Germany’s first group-stage game. The defender kept out all attacks from the opposition up until the 87th minute. In a moment of confusion, Rudiger accidentally headed the ball into his own net from a set-piece play, which eventually evaded Manuel Neuer and fell into the back of the net.
Fans noticed that even though Antonio Rudiger will take no pride in scoring the own goal, he claimed a unique and unbelievable record for himself! A fan mentioned that the Real Madrid centre-back became the joint top scorer for Scotland in tournament football in the last 25 years!
Germany face Hungary on Wednesday while Scotland are up against Switzerland on Thursday.
German maestro receives standing ovation after completing incredible passing record
Toni Kroos is a master passer of the ball. The 34-year-old has already announced that the Euros will be his final tournament for the National team while having already hung up his boots for Real Madrid. The legendary midfielder did not miss a single beat for Die Mannschaft as they picked up a 5-1 win over Scotland. After a brilliant display in midfield, coach Julian Nagelsmann took him off in the 80th minute.
As the player made his way to the touchline, the home crowd rose to give the World Cup winner a standing ovation, and rightly so. A quick look at his in-game statistics revealed that Kroos attempted 102 passes, having completed all but one of them! With his brilliance on display once again, fans are taking in what is left of his professional career.
Kroos was replaced by Borussia Dortmund captain Emre Can, who ended up scoring a stunning goal to make it 5-1 for the hosts. His 99% passing accuracy is the highest in the competition since 1980 for a player who has attempted more than 100 passes. Germany have failed to progress past the group stages of the World Cup and the Round of 16 of the Euros in 2018 and 2021 respectively. Toni Kroos might just be what they need to change that record.
