It has been two years since Jalen Ramsey left the Los Angeles Rams for the Miami Dolphins. The cornerback’s financial demands were not met by the Rams, which resulted in a trade to Miami. Now, in a ‘life comes full circle’ moment, the Rams are one of the many teams interested in trading for Jalen Ramsey as the Dolphins seek fair deals for him.

The Miami Dolphins did not mention a specific reason that led them to put Jalen Ramsey on the trading block. The team has brushed aside rumors that this decision was taken from a financial standpoint. Ramsey has not been traded yet because he comes with a big salary cap hit. His $24 million per year reduces his appeal.

However, his former head coach Sean McVay is motivated to bring Jalen Ramsey back home. The Rams-Ramsey relationship was successful, as the corner has never won a playoff game since he joined the Dolphins. The issue appears to be Ramsey being reluctant to take a pay cut, while the teams interested in landing him will seek to re-negotiate a new deal that will reduce his compensation.

McVay said as much during his press conference:

Usually, those are scenarios and situations that you have to have plans in place prior to executing some of the decisions that have occurred. Definitely don’t want to rule anything out because we’re always open-minded to onboarding and acquiring quality players and people like him if we’re able to do that, but there would be some obstacles that are real that are in the place of maybe preventing that from occurring.

The head coach is keen on bringing Jalen Ramsey back, but does not wish to rush the process either. He did mention that there exist obstacles that are preventing the deal from moving forward. In all likelihood, the issue is Ramsey’s compensation. He will turn 31 later this year, and that is the age that players at his position begin to decline.

Jalen Ramsey’s return to the Rams seems less likely after McVay’s comments

The recent update from Sean McVay displays a lesser degree of optimism in comparison to his last statement. The head coach had previously mentioned that the Rams have not closed the door on a reunion with Ramsey, and that they would attempt to do their best in pursuing him.

The Los Angeles Rams cannot offer Jalen Ramsey $20 million or over, even if they wanted to. As per Over The Cap, the team has a little under $22 million in cap space. So if they do sign Ramsey at his current price, they would be $2 million in the red. Additionally, it is not ideal for one player to take up the remainder of the cap space.

The Dolphins are actively seeking trade partners for Ramsey. They do not just want to part ways with him, but are hoping to get a few late-round picks in the draft. One thing is certain: if the season started tomorrow, Jalen Ramsey would not be taking the field for the Dolphins. The relationship is at a stage where both parties have to move on; there is no going back from this. Miami is not willing to pay Ramsey any money once they move him. This has further reduced interest from other teams. A bigger question is how long the corner will continue to perform at an elite level. Ramsey has been consistent, and there have been slight drops, but nothing drastic enough to cause concern.
