The 2024 Paris Olympics is underway, and it didn’t take long for the world to take notice of the footballing prowess on display. Argentina opened their Olympic campaign against Morocco on the 24th of July at Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium in Saint-Etienne. It didn’t take long for things to get interesting, as the men in red took a two goal lead by the 49th minute.

Argentina responded with urgency, as Guiliano Simeone pulled one back in the 68th minute. After a nerve-racking final 20 minutes or so, the match official decided to award a whopping 15 minutes of injury time. Argentina finally managed to find an equalizer in the 16th minute of injury time, leading to all hell breaking loose inside the stadium.

Fans threw noise bombs and projectiles onto the pitch, targeting Argentine players as several others stormed the pitch. This, in turn, forced the match official to suspend the game, which led to a two-hour-long delay in proceedings. Eventually, fans were cleared out of the pitch and the official proceeded to check VAR for potential offside in the build-up to Argentina’s late goal.

The goal was ultimately ruled out for offside, following which three more minutes were played. Argentina ended up losing the game 2-1 and found themselves in third position in Group B.

Fans react to one of the ‘craziest’ openings to an Olympic campaign

Fouls, fights, and goals – Argentina’s Group B opener against Morocco had it all. As the game came to a delayed yet eventful close, fans were at a loss for words to describe what had transpired in the last few hours. That being said, a supporter claimed that the aftermath of the game only clarifies one thing – it is the world against Copa America champions Argentina.

Another claimed that the game was easily one of the most interesting ones of 2024. Several Argentine fans felt that the result was unfair, given the massive two-hour delay in disallowing their equalizer. In response to the same, rival fans claimed that VAR made the right decision and that Argentina finally knew what it felt like to be on the ‘wrong’ end of decisions.

Neutral fans thoroughly enjoyed the occasion as they shared their excitement to witness one of the most unpredictable ends of a football match. Others tagged UEFA in the comments, sharing snippets of ‘wrong’ calls made in the past, reminding VAR that it still isn’t too late to change their decision if the Olympics committee can. Argentina will have to muster a win against Iraq if they are to keep their hopes of qualification alive.
