Incidents connected to language use and cultural expectations occasionally emerge in cities where bilingual identity is deeply embedded. A recent video published on social media featured #6-ranked UFC featherweight contender Arnold Allen alleging that he was physically assaulted in Montreal after not using French while he was coming back from sparring.

Allen made his UFC promotional debut in June 2015 in the featherweight division. Over the course of his career in MMA, he compiled a record of 20 wins and three losses. He suffered a loss to former champion Max Holloway in April 2023. Subsequently, he was defeated by Movsar Evloev in January 2024 by decision. In July 2024, he returned to the win column, defeating Giga Chikadze by unanimous decision.

Allen is known for integrating deadpan humour and exaggeration into his storytelling, creating persistent ambiguity over which anecdotes are literal and which are intentionally comedic. He has a widespread social media presence and analyzes fights and main events on his YouTube channel. ‘Almighty’ was recently analyzing the upcoming UFC 321 fight card when he revealed the story of his attack.

I’m in Montreal currently, training for stuff and I got beat up in the street because I wasn’t using French. I got jumped because I didn’t speak French. That’s what the bruises are all about; don’t worry about it.

Allen regularly trains at TriStar Gym in Montreal, the same gym long associated with Firas Zahabi and the former champion Georges St‑Pierre. Zahabi is one of the most commended MMA coaches and is known for training Robert Whittaker and Rory MacDonald, in addition to GSP. Allen’s presence in that city underscored how his personal and professional life overlap with the multicultural setting of Québec.

The English featherweight is known for his superior boxing prowess and ability to put on entertaining performances against durable opponents. Allen cemented his place in the 145-pound rankings after his knockout win over Dan Hooker in 2022. He further rose through the ranks when he won a TKO against Calvin Kattar, who injured his knee in a fight that was dubbed to determine “best boxer in the UFC”.

Allen has been out of competition since his victory over Giga Chikadze in July 2024, making this one of the longest breaks in his UFC featherweight tenure. During this hiatus, former bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling publicly called for a matchup. The callout undoubtedly highlighted Arnold Allen’s continued relevance in the promotion despite his time away from the octagon.
